Should You Buy a Small Business Franchise Opportunity or a Small Business For Sale?
50The types of small business franchise opportunities are unlimited.
Franchise businesses that immediately come to mind are Pizza Hut, Subway, all the hamburger, fish, and chicken fast food restaurants, etc. But those are very expensive – at least, they are out of my price range.
But there are many less expensive franchises that range from handyman and home remodeling services, pet care, automotive and tools to children’s products and travel services. You can probably find whatever business you are looking for.
But is a small business franchise opportunity right for you?
The best place to start your research is on the internet. The first thing to consider is whether you want to buy a small business for sale or invest in a small business franchise opportunity.
A small business for sale is purchased directly from another business owner. The cost of this type of business can be substantial. The relationship between you and the seller generally ends at the time of the sale. At that point, you are on your own.
A franchise is generally purchased from a franchiser. The upfront cost of the purchase can be significant depending on the franchise you are buying.
Some can be fairly affordable. Much depends on the amount of capital you have to invest.
The franchiser generally receives a royalty depending on the success of your business. Your success is in the best interest of the franchiser.
With a franchise, you receive the benefit of the franchise’s name recognition. You receive training and support by the franchiser. You must follow very strict guidelines in operating your business.
It’s important to determine that, if you follow the guidelines of the franchise business model, you have a high probability of having a profitable business.
It’s important to know the normal payback time. This depends on the upfront cost of the purchase compared to the projected profitability or positive cash flow of the business. A shorter payback period is generally better, especially if you need to see positive net cash flow quickly.
As a franchisee, you can also network with other similar franchise owners and draw upon their advice.
Home business franchises are becoming more popular. Many times, you can operate your franchise from your home. This eliminates the cost of storefront property. But you will probably need to leave your home to conduct many of your normal business activities.
Here is another alternative.
A professional internet marketing business provides a strong alternative.
I’m not talking about a typical MLM business where you must sell a ton of products in order to make any serious money. I’m talking about a direct sales business where only a few sales can give you a significant monthly income.
In most cases, the upfront costs are considerably less than buying a
small business for sale or a small franchise business opportunity.
You
have no employees. The chance for early profitability and positive cash
flow is much greater. Excellent training is available. In most cases,
business activities can be conducted from the comfort of your home. You
work with very professional, like-minded business people.
In my situation, I strongly considered all three alternatives. I came very close to buying a small business for sale.
But decided on a professional internet marketing business. I was able
to retire from my Chief Financial Officer position in corporate America
within months of joining this type of business.
The type of
business you choose is a decision that is completely up to you. Each
alternative has advantages. Some have more disadvantages than others.
No matter what your decision, I wish you the very best.
