Should You Wake Up A Child That Is Having A Nightmare?

This kind of thing can be quite tricky. It does depend on the child but I will share with you a little bit of my experience with kids and nightmares.

I have 6 little brothers - 4 of which are between the ages of 0 and 5. They do have a nightmare or two from time to time. Sometimes they would wander out of their bedrooms crying. Other times they would be lying in bed tossing and turning, screaming and crying. Here are a few tips on both scenarios.

Scenario #1 - Wandering Out Of Their Rooms Crying

Don't run to them as such because this could give them even more of a fright - especially if the dream is about a big monster chasing them or something.

Don't let yourself get upset. The last thing you want is you crying with them because then that'll worry them further.

Give them a hug and try to soothe them. Act like everything is normal because that tends to settle them down a lot quicker.

Explain to them what had happened, regardless of what age they may be. Talking to them will also calm them down.

Scenario #2 - Tossing and Turning, Screaming and Crying In Their Beds

Don't remove them from their bed straight away. Put a hand on them and talk to them while lightly jogging them back into a calm sleep.

If they suddenly wake up or were already awake, still try to jog them back to sleep. They may want a hug so make sure you give them one and tell them it's okay. You can once again explain to them what had happen and that it was all just a bad dream.

Try not to encourage them to sleep in your bed with you after having a bad dream because eventually it will become second nature and they won't think twice about crawling into bed with you after a bad dream. You want them to be able to sleep comfortably in their own bed - not yours.

Anyway, I hope this little hub helps you out with any nightmare problems your children may have. With experience from my brothers' nightmares, the above advice did them some good, so hopefully it will do the same for you and your kids.
