Should we allow children to watch television? If yes, what kind of programmes are suitable for the age group of 5-10yrs?

What goes in...must come out.

Should they watch T.V.? Well, that all depends on what kind of worldview you want them to grow up having. Children (and all people for that matter) develop their worldview based on the influences they take in. Their values, habits, decision-making abilities all have to come from somewhere, and they come from the input they receive. Now, if you want your child to make decisions based soley on the clever antics of say, Kim Possible, the morals of Jay-Z, or the advice of Oprah; sure hand your kid the remote and let them go wild! On the other hand, if you want them to have a worldview more similiar to your own, you might want to reign in the television viewing.

It's aways good to watch shows with your child to see if you approve of the message being sent. Do the characters on the show support the kind of values you are trying to teach? If your child began to act like one of the characters, and ages 5-10 will certainly begin acting like who they see on television, would you be okay with that? Watch the shows and decide for yourself. Certainly some television is educational -- Dora, Baby Einsteins, among others. Some television is funny and clean -- Hannah Montana. But there is much more to be wary of.

Also, television shouldn't be their primary source of entertainment. Let them use their imagination! Read books. Go outside. Play games! Television is a tool -- use it for what YOU want. No more.

Hope it helps!

My family didn't have a TV until I was 12 - then I got addicted to it! When I got married, we made an agreement that there would be NO TV in our house. So far our kids aren't missing a thing and they foster a love for reading.

I think it's a great idea. I would be perfectly content without a tv in the house as well.
