Should college athletes get paid?

I've pondered whether or not college football and basketball players should get paid for years. Many people feel that free tuition and free room and board are more than enough compensation for the collegiate athlete. Nevertheless, universities make millions of dollars in television revenue from NCAA basketball tournament bids or NCAA football bowl game invitations. Some schools earn as much as a fourth of their revenue through football and basketball programs.

I believe college basketball and football players should be compensated for the revenue that they generate for the school; but not in the traditional sense of payment. College athletes shouldn't be paid a salary because of the fact that they would lose their amateur status. However, I think they should be paid in the form of a stipend that is contingent upon them playing sports the entire four years and graduating with a degree.

This would be a win-win situation for both parties: universities would profit from the services of an athlete for four years, and the athlete would profit from receiving a valuable four-year degree and generous monetary compensation for their hard work on the court or gridiron. There would be more incentive for the athlete to apply himself in the classroom and not use college merely as a training ground for professional sports. Athletes that don't make the pros won't feel exploited once their playing eligibility is over. They would have a degree and a cash stipend that is based on a sizable percentage of the revenue earned during their tenure at the university.

they already get paid. They earn an education worth thousands of dollars per year. An average college student can leave college with $100,000 in debt. But these athletes are givin rides and coast through college classes. They dont deserve to get paid. They wouldn't work harder in the classroom. Most teachers dont care how much work they actually accomplish. They just pass them because they're an athlete. I've seen this in the past four years I was in school.

Colleges are also non-profit. The money generated from the athletic programs are reinvested into the school. That is the worst idea you have ever had

Before you blast my comment Joey, ask youself this: If you were the number one college basketball player in the nation on a four-year scholarship, and the school generated millions of dollars annually solely because people were dying to watch you play on television or in person, and you didn't receive a dime for your services; how would you feel?

Well, i would feel fantastic because I am playing the sport I LOVE. And i am playing the sport because I LOVE IT. Thats why college basketball is better than the NBA. The kids are playing because they want to, not because the get a paycheck.

Education is worth more than money. Your giving these young kids an opportunity to go to college. For many of them, the opportunity would not be there without their skills. Perhaps they would be able to get into a college. But you can assume that the majority of these athletes would not be accepted into these top colleges that they're playing for.

Besides, if you give these athletes money, they are just going to blow it.

I agree with most of what you are saying thus far. In fact, I was happy when the NBA raised its age limit to 20 years old, for example. However, there's also a flip side to the coin. It's wrong when a school like Delaware St can fly under the radar for years, get lucky and profit by landing a player like LeBron James hypothetically speaking, and land top recruits for years to come; all because of one recruit who wasn't compensated fully.

There's no difference in the college basketball player and someone who invents a product that will sell for millions, but is offered only thousands for it by a major company.

The colleges should also give the students sports players extra years to graduate.
