Shower Heads – How to Choose the Right Shower Head
70Make finding the right shower head a simple, painless task, with this complete and informative guide to all things shower head.
Shower heads can have several distinguishing features which mark one type from the next and help you decide which is right for you to purchase. Here are some of the most common features:
Adjustable power. Shower outlets with adjustable spray levels are fairly common on the market, and can be useful for a variety of reasons, such as reducing the spray strength when bathing a young child, or increasing the spray strength when you feel like you need a good soak.
Water-saving setting. Many types of shower outlet now offer a “water-saving” setting, which is great for people who want to save money on heating and water bills. This is of course extremely useful in today's financial climate and become a shrewd way to save money on energy and utilities.
Compatibility. Before you purchase a new shower outlet, it is important to know it will work with your existing shower. Look for a head that has a universal fit, which will work with most common shower styles, otherwise you might be left with a great-looking shower outlet that you can not actually use.
Thermostatic. Thermostatic shower heads allow you to set maximum and minimum water temperatures, which is a great safety feature to prevent accidental scalding.
Shower Head Types
Fixed Heads. Fixed head shower outlets are intended to be affixed directly to the wall where the shower is based. These are usually very practical, because once you have fitted them they require very little or no maintenance or upkeep.
Handsets. In some cases handset shower outlets can be affixed directly to the wall like fixed head outlets, but the important thing to remember is that they are also detachable and can be moved around by hand – hence the name! Hand set outlets are great for in-depth cleaning and rinsing.
Modern Creative Styles. Nowadays there are a lot of stylish, contemporary shower heads available, usually on the upper-end of the interior decorating market. For example, the Aquavolo shower outlet is a large, square panel, with four sets of grids, and each grid containing several tiny water holes. As well as functioning as a conventional shower, the Aquavolo turns at the flip of a switch into a full, rain shower style outlet. Other interesting, creative styles on the market include heads that can switch between a normal type of shower, and a waterfall-style pouring.
Always Remember the Valve
There is often a belief when it comes to heads for your shower that the bigger the size of shower outlet, the more powerful the water flow is. This is actually a myth. The strength of water flow is actually controlled by the shower valve, which is a completely separate thing from the head. Choosing the right shower heads can however offer you practicality, functionality and style that you need from your shower experience.
