How to Show Some Birthday Love

Everybody around us celebrate birthdays. Normally we would run to the nearest shopping mall and find the best gift for them. More often than not, we think that the best gifts to give to birthday celebrants are expensive items such as jewelry, designer clothes and shoes, high-tech toys, etc. We always think that birthdays should be celebrated with glitz and glamour.

We always want to give the best birthday love, but not everyone can afford to buy flashy gifts and items. Here are some tips on how to make the birthday celebrant happy. They will surely fit your budget and guarantee 100% happiness for the birthday celebrant.

Birthday Love for a Husband or Wife:

  1. Wake him/her up with a birthday cake and breakfast in bed.
  2. Fill the bathroom mirror with post-its and tell him/her what you love most about him/her.
  3. Do something out of your comfort zone with him/her.
  4. Write a letter. Let him/her know how you truly love him/her by saying how you appreciate the years you have spent together as a couple.
  5. Bring him/her to church and pray together, thank God for blessing your life with his/her existence.
  6. Bake a cake for him/her (even if you don’t know how). The mere fact that you are trying to give them something you personally created would mean much to them.
  7. Make him/her feel like the king/queen for the day. Do not let them do any household chores, or tasks. Let him/her have a day off from taking care of the kids or laundry.
  8. Create a slideshow of photos or videos of the years that you have spent together, watch it with your whole family or during an intimate dinner.
  9. Ask your children to create a piece of artwork for him/her and frame it as a gift.
  10. Flood his/her inbox with emails equivalent to his/her age. For example, if the celebrant is turning 30, then send 30 emails to him/her about why you love spending time with him/her.

Birthday Love for Children:

  1. Surprise them when they arrive home from school by filling their bedroom with balloons. Choose their favorite colors.
  2. Ask them to help you to bake their birthday cake. Let them get creative with the design.
  3. Show your birthday love to them by creating a quilt filled with their baby photos.
  4. Make them feel special for that day by treating them like royalty. (Excuse them from daily household chores.)
  5. Create a heart-warming letter for them and frame it.

Birthday Love for Parents:

  1. Create a heart-warming letter for your mom/dad.
  2. Dig out old boxes and try to find pictures of your mom/dad when they were still little, create a slideshow for them.
  3. Despite your hectic schedule, show your birthday love to them by spending the whole day with them. Your mere existence and remembering of their birthday would mean more than enough for them.
  4. Do something that they like together. If he/she love watching plays, buy tickets for them and you and watch his/her favorite play together.
  5. If distance is a problem, ask your siblings to create a video for your mom/dad’s birthday, compile it and send it to them. Seeing all of his/her children together even if its in video would mean a lot to his/her. He/she can even play it over and over again every time he/she misses you or any of your siblings.

Birthdays don't have to be an expensive gift-giving affair all the time. The reason we are celebrating birthdays is to show that we are thankful for the celebrant's existence in our lives. We are thankful that they have blessed us with time, love and memories that we will be cherished for the rest of our lives. Giving attention, time and love during their birthdays is more valuable than anything money can buy. That is what birthday love is all about!

Thanks for a great article. It's easy to forget how good it feels to be on the receiving end of some thoughtful action. Espescially among spouses with children, birthdays seem to be put on the backburner in favour of spending that time and money celebrating the kids birthdays. But as you pointed out, it doesn't take a great deal of effort to show a little birthday love to that special someone...
