Siamese Applehead Cats
68Our Appleheads Sam and Ty
My husband and I are the proud owners of two gorgeous Siamese Applehead cats. I decided to do a hub about them because:
1) They are adorable
2) Needed to share their beauty (they are too adorable not to share with the world)
3) They are the sweetest pets you could ever own
4) They are ADORABLE!!
Well obviously I had to do some research beforehand and I am so glad I did as I have now learned some very interesting things about our two adorable feline friends I would never have known otherwise.
The Siamese cat is so called as it originates from Siam or Thailand as it is known today. The Applehead, which is also known as Thai, Old-Style Siamese and Classic Siamese is the closest in appearance to the original type of Siamese cat. This is where I learned something new! I had always thought the more pointed looking Siamese cats (known as Wedgehead Siamese) were the original, however I discovered the opposite. Traditional Siamese Appleheads look the most like the Siamese originally imported from Thailand. The Wedgehead Siamese are the result of breeder's intent to encourage an elongated look also known as a Show Style Siamese. There are twelve breeds in total derived from the Siamese cat. All Siamese cats have blue eyes.
The Appleheads were brought to America on January 3rd 1879 as a gift from the American consul in Bangkok to President Rutherford B. Hayes' wife Mrs Lucy Webb Hayes.
I also discovered much to my delight that the Siamese is one of the longest living cat breeds. They have been known to live anywhere from 13 years to over 20 years! They are only 3 years old now so we have many years to come with our beautiful babies! According to my research the Siamese are generally a very healthy breed with only two main concerns.
1) When they are kittens they are more susceptible to respiratory infections so best to keep them away from drafts.
2) They are more sensitive to anesthesia so extra caution must be taken if treatments are required and when spaying or neutering.
The Siamese are very affectionate and love company...this my husband and I know well! So if you are someone who works a lot and still wants to get a Siamese cat it is recommended that you get two...they love each others company and will play together well. Our two are hilarious to watch together they are constantly sneaking up on one another and chasing each other around the home. When they are done playing they often curl up together to sleep. Such a sweet sight!
Previously my husband and I had owned only male cats and we both believe that females are a lot more laid back and even more independent. Whilst they love attention they are also very curious cats that love to sit by the windows for hours observing the abundant wild life near our home. Sam and Ty are both indoor cats which is an absolute must where we live as there are always coyotes, rattlesnakes and raptors in the backyard. Another plus with indoor cats is they in turn are not going to be a threat to the wildlife.
When it comes to entertainment DO NOT spend lots of money! We learned this the hard way. What amuses them most is the simplest and least expensive things money can buy! It turns out the hundreds of dollars spent on cat trees was a short passing interest, one cat tree is good for the claws but that is all that is necessary as they prefer obscure $18 cat tents from Amazon (see below images). When it comes to toys don't buy the many "Your Cat Will Love This" products.. buy the simple Cat Dancer Wire Dangler Toy for about $2 (see images below). This is the ONE and ONLY toy that they have never got sick of...you play until you run out of energy...the cat NEVER does! And what is it? It is wire with small pieces of cardboard on it.
Of course the one thing they love the most which is completely free is your love!
Sam and Ty were found abandoned and through much love and care have turned out to be the sweetest most affectionate fun and loyal cats you could ever wish for. If you are considering one I could not recommend them more highly but of course make sure to get all the necessary vaccinations, provide a healthy diet and plenty of love!
