52Careing for your Siberian Husky
Huskies are fairly easy to care for. A Siberian that becomes grubby with dirt will clean itself. They clean themselves much like felines. They are meticulously clean and are typically free from bad odor and parasites. Actually, this means, bathing necessities are nominal. In fact, most owners bathe their huskies once per year or less. No trimming or shaving of hair is required or suggested. Only periodic brushing to remove dead hair and keep the coat clean and shiny is required. Two times a year, Siberians will blow their undercoats, that is, they will completely shed their undercoats. The good news is that this only happens twice a year. These are very intense shedding periods that can continue for three weeks or more from start to finish. The shedding period can be somewhat messy. The hair comes out in large and small clumps. It is good to know, however, that in some areas such as Florida, it has been noticed that shedding can be year round. Other than during coat-blowing season, a Husky needs very little grooming. Some warm weather Husky owners think they are doing a good deed by shaving their dogs. When in reality, they may are harming the dog. In the hot weather, when the Huskies shed their undercoat, the topcoat provides defense from harmful UV sunrays. Shaving your Siberian, can cause a heatstroke - the topcoat keeps him cool as well.
