You do indeed lose hearing up to some degree as you grow older.  But that is natural.  However, the decrease in hearing that may start at middle age and is accompanied by ringing in the ears, more commonly known as tinnitus, could be a sign of serious illness. And so, to combat the problem, it is best to know the causes of such condition as well as finding the appropriate tinnitus treatment.

Not necessarily accompanied in old age, tinnitus or the ringing in the ears may take place at any time, at any age. For people who have been exposed to extremely loud music, the buzzing sounds may take place. Several factors can also trigger this condition such as infection in the ears or Meniere’s disease, diseases of the ear drum or the middle ear, head trauma, or more severe cases such as hypertension, heart diseases, etc.

In the US, nearly 30 million people are suffering from this condition. The causes are often undetected.  And without proper diagnosis, sometimes it is hard to find the appropriate treatments.  However, as experts say, prevention is better than cure. So before getting close to tinnitus treatment, try to prevent the condition first. Here’s how:

1. Stay away from loud noises

From more than 30 million Americans suffering from tinnitus, about 10 million can be credited to noise-induced loss of hearing. Loud noises such as those from concerts or blasting audio devices can greatly damage your ear drums even at a single setting. Once damaged, ringing in the ears will take place.

The destruction takes place within the microscopic hair cells located in the cochlea.  These cells act in response to the power-driven vibrations by transmitting electrical signals to the auditory nerves.

At normal range, the ears can only tolerate sounds below 80 decibels (dB). If a sound reaches 85 db, chances are, you may experience occasional bouts of tinnitus. And if you hear sounds higher than 85 db, your hearing can be permanently damaged. So to avoid this problem, stay away from loud noises or keep your sounds to minimum level.

2. Keep your ears dry

Excessive moisture in the ears triggers bacterial growth, which in turn causes infection. Infections of the inner ear, such as Meniere’s disease bring about ringing in the ears. So to keep your ears in perfect condition, always maintain dryness.

Tinnitus treatments may vary depending on the gravity of the problem, but once you know the culprit, you don’t even have to worry of finding such treatments.
