Laying Down the Qualities of a Silk Scarf

Aptly called the Queen of Textiles, silk and the resultant silk scarves have withstood the test of time and continues to be held in a pedestal by royalty, celebrities and common people alike.

So when an equally popular fashion accessory such as a scarf is made out of it, you could just imagine the aesthetic and practical benefits this item can possess. Just what makes this accessory so desired?

The answer lies solely on the fabric that it is made of. Being nothing more than a long piece of rectangular cloth, a scarf’s qualities are largely dependent on the fibers that were spun to create it. In this case, silk. Revealing the qualities of this much sought after fabric will help us understand the qualities of the accessory itself.

  1. Caressing – Due to its extremely fine and soft fibers, it gently hugs and follows every contour it is in contact with. Long scarves made out of it will have a handsome drop and flow effect.
  2. Durable – Although it can weaken when wet, its fibers are among the strongest of the natural fibers in the planet. Its surface is also coated by a thin layer that protects it from dirt. You can therefore expect that scarves of this make are not easily soiled. This means that not much soap need to be applied on them when washed.
  3. Insulating – A good absorber, it can take in a lot of moisture without letting you feel damp. Because of its absorption capabilities, it can easily cool the body. Since materials that cool easily also get warm easily, it can also keep the body warm during cold weather.
  4. Safe – Naturally spun by silkworms, this fabric is made up of protein fibers. As a result, this makes it one of the most hypoallergenic materials to be used on clothing. Hence, such scarves, when wrapped around the neck, don’t normally leave an itchy feel.
  5. Shiny – Each fiber has a triangular like cross section. This and its relatively high index of refraction allow it to reflect light in various directions giving it a shiny appearance. This, more than any other property, is perhaps the reason why this fabric is constantly compared to diamonds. According to many, this fabric does to the body as diamonds do to the hand. Now that you know the benefits of such a scarf, you might want to browse the web and search for the one that suits you.
