The Sacred Basil

Basil has been used a handy remedy for various ailments from time immemorial for both young and old. Civilizations of yester years have regarded it has holy and hence the name sacred basil. The botanical name of basil is ocimum sanctum, and the word sanctum means holy. Basil holds a very unique place in the Indian home remedies repertoire. The vedas contain information on basil's medicinal properties. Hindus worship the basil plant as a symbol of prosperity. All parts of the basil plant have medicinal value.

Research shows that basil is being used in Greek places of worship to this day.

Basil holds an important place in Arabian medicinal preparations. Australian aborigines have been using basil for ages.

Some Simple Remedies

For Cough and Phlegm

Take a handful of basil leaves (70 gms). Drop them in 1/4 litre water. Boil and reduce it to 30 ml. Take this twice a day (15 - 30 ml for adults, two teaspoonful for kids). Basil is an excellent expectorant and removes phlegm in chest.

For Indigestion

Add ginger or dried ginger or Bishop's weed while preparing the above mentioned decoction. Take this twice a day until cured of indigestion.

For Headache

Chew and eat about 5 basil leaves, also rub the leaves where it pains. This relieves most of the headaches.

For Common Cold

Saute a few leaves in a pan, add 1.5 glass of water and boil. Reduce it to 1 glass. Let it cool. Take this morning and evening the first day (1/4 of the quantity each time) and the next day to cure common cold problems.

For General Health

Soak couple of basil leaves in water for 5 hours. Drink off the water and eat the soaked leaves also. Regular consumption keeps you hale and healthy.
