Training a dog is a difficult thing to do, whether your dog is older or younger. Puppies are new to the world in general and are notoriously excitable and inattentive and difficult to train for those reasons. Older dogs are more stubborn and set in their ways, and have lived so long under one set of rules they are lack for wanting to switch to another. One must go about training their dogs in different ways, and take different approaches based on the way your dog learns best. Even so, there are a few things that any person should avoid doing when trying to train their dog. Don’t Spank Your Dog

Spanking your dog is one of the worst things that you can do to your pet. Even if what they did was wrong, striking them or making any type of negative physical contact can actually go against your training efforts. The only thing that hurting your dog may accomplish is them being fearful of you, and fearful dogs are innately more liable to bite people in the long run.

Also, spanking your dog sets a very bad example for your children if you have any. It is not only wrong for them to hit your dog, but also very unsafe as it could cause your dog to strike in fear. We all know that a dog that bites is a dead dog in the eyes of the law, so don't put your dog in that situation and leave violence completely out of the equation.

Don't Treat Your Dog Like an Idiot

Saying the same command over and over and over to your dog does nothing but irritates him and wears your vocals raw. If you don't want to have to deal with behavioral issues, avoid barking the same command at your dog over and over, and work on teaching them to get it right the first time. Sounds much easier said than done, huh? Not only does that create a completely meaningless word to add to your dog's vocabulary, but it is also just plain stupid. Think about it; if they don't listen the first time, they aren't going to pay any attention to you when the fifth time or tenth time barking the command at them comes around. Sure they are a dog, but give them some type of credit and take another approach.

Giving Your Dog Way Too Much Credit

No matter what way you slice it, your dog is a dog! He will never speak English, he will never understand English. If he speaks anything, he speaks dog. It is your job to get him to recognize a few words of English and associate them with movements. This means that if you say 'SIT' to them, they won't know that that means they should bend their legs and set their rump on the floor. Over time, they will learn it though.

Training your dog can be tough. For anyone, it is frustrating and upsetting and can test even the best dog-master relationship.
