The last 30 to 40 years has seen a substantial increase in single-parent families. The number of single mothers in Canada has now surpassed one million and there are more than a quarter million single fathers. In the United States in 2002 there were 1,355,000 single dads and 5,714,000 single moms.

In 2005, according to census data, 17 percent of school-aged children lived in low-income families. In the US in 2007, 12.8 million children lived below the poverty level.
