Put on your lace up shoes and shine your kitchen sink! Yes, you read that right. In her book, Sink Reflections, Marla Cilley (a.k.a. The FlyLady) claims that these two simple tasks are the beginning steps to transforming your life from turmoil to tranquility. Sounds unbelievable, right? How can wearing shoes and cleaning a sink make my life better? Don't be too quick to judge! You may be surprised at how well her methods might work for you.

FlyLady uses the acronym "CHAOS" to describe the overwhelming state of many households: "Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome." If a friend knocked on your door unexpectedly right now, would you pretend you weren't home? Because clutter can affect us mentally, physically, and socially, Cilley urges readers to put an end to CHAOS and create a clutter-free and organized home. Her approach includes setting a timer for fifteen minutes each day, and ridding your home of unwanted clutter. Here are five tools she recommends using:

  • Hot Spot Fire Drill
  • 27 Fling Boogie
  • 5 Minute Room Rescue
  • Zone Cleaning
  • Kelly's Daily Missions

Visit FlyLady's website for a detailed description of each of these de-cluttering methods.

House Cleaning in the News

  • Go green when cleaning the house (Moorpark Acorn)

Under the average American's sink lie countless wipes, paper towels and more than a half-dozen cleaning products. Many of those products are both harmful to the environment and hazardous to the home. With environmental concerns at an all-time high, are Americans tossing out their harmful chemical cleaners for "greener" alternatives? 2 days ago

  • Trumann needs a house cleaning (Trumann Democrat)

Trumann is like a lot of small towns. It's been around for a long time. The town is less prosperous than at some times in its past history. Our downtown has been left mostly empty while businesses have moved to Highway 463 and to the Highway 63 Bypass. 32 hours ago

FlyLady stresses baby steps. She says, "Keep in mind that your home did not get this way overnight and it is not going to get clean in a day." Baby steps, according to Cilley, will keep you from burning out and giving up on this challenging transformation. Using the timer and limiting yourself to just fifteen minutes of work at a time is key. As you progress through FlyLady's baby steps, other tools are incorporated into the plan. These include daily routines, a control journal, weekly routines, menu planning, conquering laundry, and zone cleaning.

At first glance, this book seems most appropriate for stay at home moms, but Cilley does a great job incorporating advice and helpful hints for working women as well. Cilley admits that "a lot of success with FlyLady depends on a single word: ATTITUDE." Although some of her ideas sound unusual, if given a chance, and the right attitude, you too can overcome CHAOS and clutter while discovering a new love for yourself, your family, and your home.
