Or, are they just a Sirius party crasher? At any rate, the iPhone application party is about to get much livelier.

Sirius XM (SIRI) has been distracted; however, times have changed. Sirius Satellite Radio merged with XM Satellite Radio in July of 2008. This merger took a great deal of internal focus to pass regulatory muster. Sirius spent over a year in merger mire – up to its eyeballs in merger activities, working to overcome FCC hurdles.

Now clear of those entanglements, Sirius is free to navigate a path to increased universal appeal. A path that several competing applications have already trod. Clear Channel Channel (CCO), Pandora, Slacker, and Last.fm have all introduced successful iPhone applications, streaming their music directly to each subscribers’ iPhone (AAPL).

Mel Karmazin, Sirius XM CEO

“I’m starting at a premise that says radio is not just recorded music – radio is discovery of new music. Some people would like to be able to hear songs they haven’t heard before and that are not on their iPod. Some want to listen to CNN or Howard Stern and not just to music. That’s why we have a laser like focus on getting content – because we think that content is what wins.”

What is the Sirius XM Satellite Radio iPhone Application?

The Sirius XM Satellite Radio iPhone application is a free download from the Apple iPhone app store. Using it, subscribers to the Sirius service can stream satellite radio content to their iPhone.

Unlike other streaming iPhone applications, Sirius XM offers varied content. Subscribers can pick the station they want to listen too, be it a music channel, comedy, news, or talk radio. No longer are iPhone users restricted to only the content they have uploaded to their iPhone.

Also, Sirius offers content that is unique.  It's not available anywhere else. An example of this is Oprah Radio (formerly known as Oprah and Friends). Click here to read more about Sirius XM’s Oprah Radio.

There are other providers of streaming online content; however, these are the four that currently offer their streaming product as an iPhone application.

Are We Evolving to a New Music Media?

I grew up with all my music on vinyl LPs and cassette tapes (my folks also made me walk our pet dinosaur!). As an adult, I’ve enlarged my music collection with many hundreds of CDs. My kids taught me to use iTunes and I was excited to RIP my large music collection to my iTunes library. As I write this article, I’m enjoying the discovery of new music and artists all being streamed to my desktop by Pandora.

The times they are a-changin’ (Bob Dylan’s 3rd album, released in 1964) . . .

So weigh in on the below poll. How do you most often listen to music these days?

Music Listening Preferences: An Evolution?

How do you prefer listening to your music?

  • Songs I have loaded to my iPod/iPhone and have available to me in iTunes. (or similar devices)
  • Streaming music services, such as Pandora, where I can create my own content channel and teach it what to serve me.
  • Albums I have purchased on CDs and play in my CD player.
  • Cassette Tapes, 8-Track Tapes, or Vinyl LPs . . .
