There are a lot of options that you can take when it comes to staying fit and losing weight. Some people prefer to work out in the comfort and privacy of their own homes while others like to get outside with nature. If you're currently not sure which approach to take, you may want to consider working out in a gym. There are a lot of things that make the gym great. Here is a list of the top six reasons to work out in a gym.

1. Friendship/ Workout Buddies

Working out at home all by yourself means that you aren't held accountable to anyone. If you decide to skip a workout, there's no one to stop you. The gym is a great opportunity to make friends and workout buddies that can help you avoid that kind of attitude.

2. Competition

The same people that you could become friends with could also be used for competition purposes. If you're on a machine like the treadmill, you can watch people around you and try to keep up with their pace. Even if they don't know that you're competing, it's still a good way to avoid going too easy with your workout.

3. Dedication

So many people buy a workout machine for their home hoping that they will work out more. They intend on using it while they watch television. Most of the time though, they never use it at all. There are all sorts of distractions at home like dishes and laundry and kids. People will usually find any excuse not to exercise. When you go to the gym, though, there's nothing else to do but exercise. If you can't get yourself there, then you will exercise. At home, there are just too many distractions.

4. Getting Out of the House

There are a lot of people who spend time at home. Stay at home moms and people who work at home often spend too much time there. The gym is a good excuse to get out and about. If you find that you're at home and bored, then go to the gym. You'll feel good that you actually went out and did something important.

5. Variety

When you workout at home, there are only so many things you can do. You may have a few workout DVDs and some equipment, but that's likely it. After a while, those things can get really boring. The cool thing about the gym is that there are a lot of things to choose from. You aren't likely to get bored if there are classes you can take, cardio and weight machines to use, or free weights to work out with.

6. Amenities

Depending on the kind of gym that you're a member of, there are likely a lot of extras involved. For example, most gyms have pools that you can use both for exercise and for fun. There are also hot tubs that are great for relaxing your sore muscles. Some even have saunas and steam rooms. You definitely can't find this sort of thing in your own home.

If you aren't sure whether to join a gym, you should keep these points in mind. There is something for every mood at the gym. On one day you may feel like you'd rather do a fitness class than use the machines or you may want to encouragement of a workout buddy. You can find all of this and more at your local gym.
