Six Degrees of Separation and Affiliate Marketing
65A simple mathmatical principle
The theory of six degrees of separation states that every person in the world is linked to each other by no more than six degrees of separation.
Here is the simple mathematical approach to this.
Every person in the world knows at least 45 people.
On level one you know 45 people on the second level if all 45 of the people you know knows 45 people that places 2025 people on your second level of separation.
So let me try to diagram this for you.
Level one 45 people
Level two 2025 people
Level three 91,125 people
Level four 4,100,625 people
Level five 184,528,125 people
Level six 8,303,765,625 people
The estimated word population as of July 2007 is 6,602,224,175
So in theory you should have a connection to everyone in the World through no more than six degrees of separation.
How does this apply to affiliate marketing?
When I discuss affiliate marketing I do not mean multilevel affiliate marketing. Many MLM organizations use this theory to recruit people to become members. We have all heard it. Find three who know three and you are on your way to riches. I have heard that mantra so many times that it disgust me. I refuse to participate in any multilevel affiliate program.
Affiliate marketing in the terms used here means selling other peoples products or generating leads. If used properly the six degrees of separation provides you with an unlimited market for affiliate products. Not through direct marketing face to face but via the WWW.
To apply the six degrees of separation in affiliate marketing you need to concentrate on your linking strategies and use of free services to bring links into your sites that market affiliate offerings. This can be accomplished using social networking sites, blog aggregators, article marketing and sites like Hubpages and Squidoo.
The more incoming links to your sites from outside sources also increases the number of links that are given freely if you provide quality content. If your content has quality and provides people with the information they are after you will be amazed the number of times you will be referred to as a resource in forums or other membership type sites so your incoming links increase exponentially.
Concentrate on quality and use resources available and watch your incoming links grow. Based on the six levels of separation if enough people link to your content your offers will be easier to find and every page on the world wide web will link to you separated by no more than six levels of separation.

Well there are multilevel affiliate programs. GDI comes to mind. Any affiliate program that requires you to recruit other people to make money is a multilevel affiliate program.
There are some people who promote those and do quite well, but it is a segment of the market I do not wish to participate in. I rather do my own thing and not build a list for program owners or have to recruit and train other.
Multilevel affiliate programs and MLM are synonymous. They are the same thing just one tries to hide the fact that they are a MLM.
Also another point I wish to make. If I have to pay to be an affiliate then I have no interest either. A true affiliate program allows me to market products and services without buying anything. If I have to pay to promote a product that is not an affiliate program that is MLM in disguise even if it is just one level of referral commission.
Don't pay to promote.
GDI isn't an affiliate program, don't you get it? Its straight up MLM. Thats what it is. Since you have to build a downline to earn on each level then its MLM not an affiliate program.
There are multi tiered affiliate programs which allow you to earn on many levels. This isn't dependent on how much each tier earns, its just that its set up in a way to offer more ways to pay the affiliate for their efforts.
Don't get it confused. I value your opinion as I love reading your hubs. I come back all the time to see what new stuff you got so it kinda bothers me that you would say multilevel affiliate programs and mean MLM which gives affiliate marketing a dirty name.
And as for those pay to promote programs, I totally agree with you. I wish I you could give an example of one of these types of program though.
Here is the deal. I do not participate in any program where I have to be a customer to recieve compensation. Any program that requires you to be a paying custome to make money is a MLM in disguise.
Like it or not, paying to be able to promote a product is the back bone of MLM and most multi tiered affiliate programs. If that is the requirement I pass. That is not affiliate marketing that is buying a position!!

Why do you use the term 'multilevel affiliate marketing'. That makes affiliate marketing look bad. I think you mean 'multilevel marketing' which is MLM.
