Sixty years of Indian Independence
47Every time I watch Swades (Indian movie)some of the scenes really make me teary-eyed and I start thinking about going back to my motherland but somehow that spirit dies down in a day or two after realizing what did I go through to get here. I can't forget the long lines in the bank to get your passbook done, long lines in the college office to get the transcripts done and who can forget the 5mile line outside the US embassy. How can I forget the queues to get my H1-B visa stamped on my first visit. I guess it wasn't me but pretty much all of us went through the same exercise for coming to the US. So what's the big deal? Everytime someone asks me do you wanna go back ? I pause for a second , think about the long queues, corruption, bootlicking, lousy infrastructure, water, electricity roads.....and then with utmost confidence say NO. But how can my country be so bad where I spent my life's 22 years with fun, independence, love and a sense of security? It's not that my country is bad or anything its my selfish pair of eyes which are used to seeing cleanliness, organized environment, lesser corruption and faster results and they want to continue seeing that. I guess that's why people say "Ignorance is bliss" When I was a kid I used to sing Jana Gana Mana (National Anthem) on Independence day and felt too proud during the song with the flag in my hand and in the attention position. I was too naive to realize that people who came to hoist the flag were not even worthy of hoisting the flag (politicians). So let me ask myself a serious question. Do I need the infrastructure, water, electricity or do I need to live in a sense of security, living amongst your childhood friends, relatives, reliving your childhood memories? This is a question which haunts a lot of people at some stage of their life. On the eve of India's 60th Independence I think about this and sleep with a sense of optimism and hope that my country will not only have love, warmth but will also have excellent infrastructure.
