Your Philtrum-the Sexiest Part of the Body
74
Philtrum? For those of you not familiar with this part of the human anatomy, it's that groove just above your upper lip and just below your nose situated between your nostrils.
The word philtrum is from the Greek word philtron from philein, which means "to love; to kiss". Very fitting, huh?
Philtrum Folklore
According to folklore, God sends an angel to a woman's womb so that the angel can teach the baby all of the wisdom of the world. Then the angel presses it's finger (leaving an indention) to the baby's mouth to shush the baby from telling the secrets. There is a reference to this in the Christopher Walken movie, The Prophecy.
My Fascination With Philtrums Begins
I have been attracted to men with well-defined philtrums long before I knew what they were called. I know I'm not alone on this one. Many have just not been able to put their finger on it. And those that have, didn't know it had a name.
Looking back, as I try to analyze where it started for me, I find that my earliest recollection of noticing a man's philtrum was when I was a very young girl, maybe 5-6 years old. My dad had a friend that would sometimes visit us and there was just something about him that I liked. However, it wasn't until I was in my late twenties that I figured it out when I ran into him again. He was now a much older man. Age hadn't been too kind to him, but his philtrum was as chiseled as ever.
In my teens, I thought Harry Wayne Casey of the 70s rock group K.C. and the Sunshine Band was the hottest man alive. You'll remember him from such mega hits as "Shake, Shake, Shake (Your Booty)" and "(Do A Little Dance, Make a Little Love) Get Down Tonight". My personal favorite was always "Boogie Shoes" from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. It was his philtrum that caught my attention. He had some other fine features as well as you can tell by the photo, but I could sit and stare at his philtrum for hours.
I think the philtrum is the sexiest part of a man because It helps define the lips. To me, it's what makes the lips poised for action. *sigh* It's what makes the lips so kissable and it mesmerizes me to watch them speak or sing.
I've tried to assemble a few samples of men I think are fairly good examples of sexy men with nice philtrums.

Thanks Clockwork! You're a nut!
The philtrum,, huh? LOL
oooooooooooooooh yeah! LOL Thanks for stopping by Kari.
Hummm-- I never knew about all that, but my hubby has a very defined philtrum-- so much so , that for much of his life he wore a moustache because it was hard to shave there without nicking himself.
I, also have the trait to a degree.. but no moustache, yet.
I have to admit (at the risk of sounding bi-sexual) I do find it sexy on women as well. LOL It's just a defining feature that I notice and appreciate. I'm glad you and your hubby have that!
I'm a sucker for facial hair as well....but I limit that to men. LOL
I was a little afraid to check this out, KCC - wasn't at all sure what part of the male anatomy we were talking about. And after looking at that photo of KC, I'm still not sure! ;-)
Thanks for stopping by Mindfield! Yes, KC does have a bit more going on in that pic than just his philtrum!
Do you realize how much bravery I had to muster to click on this hub to see EXACTLY what a philtrum is? The relief that washed over me!!
I love the story of the angel.
I'm with Mindfield on the KC pic! My eyes!! Please, someone, call 911!!!!!!!!!!!
Very interesting, KCC. And I'm glad the facial hair thing is limited to men for you!!
Well, I'm certainly glad you mustered the courage to stop by and read it, PM! I enjoyed the angel story as well, I hadn't heard that until I was conducting a little research about the philtrum to try to add a little meat to my hub besides me just going ga-ga over guys with nice ones.
Yeah, KC certainly left little to the imagination for that particular concert. I doubt they could pay him enough to wear a similar outfit today. He had gained a considerable amount of weight at one point. Although, some recent pictures I've seen, he seems to have slimmed down some.
Ha ha, the facial hair thing! Yeah, women with facial hair are a bit of a turn-off.
I always thought it was a weird part of the face and never knew why it was there. Kind of like how it's weird that men have nipples though we don't use them. Thanks for the name, good thing to know. Thanks!
You're welcome, Harlem6! Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome.
My mom told me that angel story a long time ago... it's tingling in my brain to write a short story about it, thanks for the reminder.
As for weird things that attract us, I myself like a guy with heavy eyelids, like Cillian Murphy. I couldn't say why.
I can understand the the heavy eyelid attraction. There's a sultry bedroom look to them. :)
I'm glad I reminded you of something you want to write about!
I had a teacher tell me she found men's collar bones to be particularly attractive. I had never heard of that. It's funny what floats our boats.
