Learn How to Juggle
Parents around the world for the most part will love to entertain their child at home and elicit squeals of laughter. How about learning the simple art of juggling?
Alright, it requires a lot of practice to perfect this art but would still delight your children and friends. The first few times will probably result in losing the ball or whatever item and risk self-inflicting some sort of goose egg, from hitting your head with whatever object, you choose, if and when you start practicing the art of juggling.
Juggling is the ability to do a trick that will require great dexterity, eye-hand coordination and understanding Newtonian mechanics. Newtonian mechanics is described as the study of the motions of bodies, along with the forces that accompany or cause these motions.
Understanding this law then says that the time a ball spends in flight is proportional to the square root of the height of the throw. The need for either speed or height increases rapidly with the number of objects juggled.
Juggling is going to require you to be able to anticipate errors of space and time. Each ball will have to be thrown sufficiently high enough to allow for time to deal with the other balls. Vision, feel and memory will affect the timing of your hands between toss and catch actions but can be achieved.
The simple rules to follow and keep in mind when starting this art will require that you ;
– Look at the highest point
– Throw the next ball when the previous one reaches the top
– Identify and remember the feel and touch
Learning to juggle is based not just on vision but the sensations of the catch and toss. Once these are identified then the skill can be built further with different items and amount. There are some basic and popular juggling patterns ;
– Cascade, an odd number of balls are tossed from one hand to the other.
– Fountain, the balls are thrown and caught with the same hand, traditionally used for an even number of objects.
– Shower, all the objects are tossed in a circle.
– Multiplex, throwing a few objects from a single hand simultaneously
Once you have learned even just the basics with three object juggling you will bring smiles and admiration from your children or audience. Further practice can lead to learning that use of different items have very different physical characteristics that will determine how they can best be juggled.
Remember that no two throws or catches will ever be exactly the same because there are so many points to keep in mind. All the skilled jugglers we see at the circus or fairs are able to tightly control the variables involved to throw the objects as consistently as possible. Read other related Hubs --> here and there.

Hi BC99, yes, all is well with me. :) thanks.
Good, just missed seeing you about !
I have been around BC99, :) always nearby.
What worked best for me was getting the hang of juggling two balls in one hand first. After that, three balls in two hands just came naturally. I love the application of Newtonian Mechanics to juggling in this article.
Hi ZWorkz, I'm glad you enjoyed the Hub. I thought including the note about Newtonian mechanics would help increase appreciation for the skill and the juggler. :) thank you for visiting and sharing your comments.
Great hub! I always wanted to juggle, but I have the hand-eye coordination of a drunken sailor. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Hi CD :) I'm glad you enjoyed the article. All it takes is a little practice and make sure you use *soft* to prevent injury, lol. Thank you for your comments and your visit. :)
I actually know how to juggle three balls. I spent the entire first semester at college learning how. That was a bad omen, lol.
My engineering friend could juggle 5. I was so put down. But I have juggled with a clown suit when my kids were young at classes on Halloween. They were mortified but the other kids loved me. Lolololol.
Hi Bgamall :) it is a delightful skill for everybody. Entertaining and does require the know-how. I think it's great to bring smiles to others. :) thank you for sharing your comments.
