Skydiving Equipment

What is proper skydiving equipment? One might think that it is no big deal jumping of a plane in certain altitude.Well, it is not that simple. If you have not inspected your skydiving equipment something could go seriously wrong and you could end up falling to your death.

The Parachute Rig

The parachute rig is used by every skydiver and consists of 5 parts.

1.The main canopy, the parachute itself. This is the first one deployed when the skydiver reaches a certain altitude to reduce his or her speed before hitting the ground.

The main parachute is placed inside a backpack and will not come loose when you pull the cord,It also has thick shoulder and leg straps which you have to put around your body. This is then connected to a line which runs from the parachute to the container. There are usually 5 sets of lines namely A, B, C, D and brake lines.

2.The reserve parachute. This is used when there is something wrong with the first parachute. Can be deployed by pulling the cord, or will deploy automatically if you have an automatic activation device (AAD).

The AAD is another safety device that skydivers are currently using. AAD stands for automatic activation device. The AAD automatically activate the jumper’s reserve parachute in the even that the jumper is disabled or disoriented or has lost track of the altitude and failed to deploy the main parachute.

The AAD was introduced by a German named Helmut Cloth. It was first called as CYPRESS or Cybernetic Parachute Release System. It used to be a student only device.During a free-fall, the CYPRESS uses computer interpreted barometric metering to constantly assess a skydiver’s altitude and rate of descent. If a skydiver is descending faster that a certain speed, this device will instantly activate the skydiver’s reserve.

Currently, the AAD is available for novice and expert skydivers. It has evolved into a compact, reliable and readily available for an average of $1200.

3.You cannot jump in jeans and t-shirt, you must have a jumpsuit when you skydive.A jumpsuit protects you from strong winds and other forces of nature when you jump of the plane.

It will also protect you when you are landing.A lot of people do not land feet first, once they hit the ground.

4.The Altimeter. It helps you decide when you need to deploy your parachute. It tells you how far you are from the ground. The altimeter is very useful when you skydive at night.

5.Helmet and protective padding is also very important. You can also get a spinal protector that will protect your spinal cord if you should accidentally fall on your back when you hit the ground.

Always check, and double check, your skydiving equipment before you get on the plane and before you jump of the plane.

If there is a problem with your skydiving equipment, you could be jumping to your death. This is why it is so important that a skydiving instructor or one of your companions inspect your equipment.
