Sleep Disorders - Sleep Problems

Sleeps problems anyone, hands up if you get a nice relaxing 6-8 hours sleep a night. I hate to tell you peeps with your hands down but having a sleep disorder or sleep problem is bad for your health. Ok humor me but at times I feel like a teacher, always wanted to be one, you know but anyway hands up if you think smoking is the biggest risk to getting heart disease. No my friends not getting enough sleep actually puts your risk of a heart attack up by 50 percent.

What Is Insomnia And What Causes It ?

Insomnia is the worst sleep disorder because you have difficulty falling asleep or when you fall asleep you wake up too early in the morning or have an unrefreshing sleep. Insomnia then gives you problems during the day like lack of energy, tiredness, difficulty concentrating and irritability, jeeez I just described myself there.

So what does cause insomnia, why can't you just fall asleep like a baby, yes I know babies don't fall asleep they cry all night, tis a saying ok. Stress can cause it, lack of exercise, drinking but on average you need 6-8 hours sleep because those precious hours is when the body heals itself after a hard day, trust me without the proper amount of sleep that heart of yours isn't going to get the overnight fix it needs. Longterm, it kills you, that enough to scare you !

The most common cause of insomnia is depression which is weird because I get depressed over lack of sleep. One secret if you want a good nights sleep is to avoid caffeine, smoking or alcohol an hour or so before bedtime as obviously they are substances that keep you awake as is having excessive naps in the afternoon or evening but a short nap is actually really good for your health.

The Benefits Of Sleep

A lot of people really don't realise the benefits of a good nights sleep, they really don't, maybe they should sleep on it. After a good sleep you feel so much better, you can think better, you react faster and your emotions are much more focused.

Sleep is the main thing that repairs the body, jeeez did you think sleep was just for you to shift your lazy ass into bed. Your body produces extra protein molecules whilst you are sleeping and that in turn helps to mend your body. All that stress, infection and tolls of the everyday routine is repaired as you float off into the land of nod. Jeeez you impressed by my knowledge, don't be I was told it by a Doctor who looked after me, just after I almost died. Lack of sleep kills, especially the old ticker.

Sleep keeps your Heart Healthy by lowering cholestoral levels and keeping your blood pressure level down. Sleep helps the heart by reducing the levels of stress.

Sleep Improves Your Memory because lack of sleep makes you lose concentration, it's actually true because I was to write this last night but because of lack of sleep I forgot, Sleep lets your brain take in new experiences and knowledge and tis where that old saying "why don't you sleep on it " came from.

Sleep Reduces Stress because it lowers your blood pressure and the stress hormones. By reducing the high levels of stress that good old sleep helps reverse these effects and helps you reach a relaxed state. I am liking the concept of sleep more and more no wonder a lack of it can give you a heart attack, jeeez I should be sleeping instead of typing this.

Sleep Can Help You Lose Weight because when the body doesn't get enough sleep the hormone balances are interrupted and you want to feed that greedy face. Your body longs for food and off you go to snack, so if you want to lose some weight make getting enough sleep on top of your list.

And you thought sleep was just something you climbed into bed and did, kinda amazing the benefits of sleep and the wonder of the human body. Many of us sit up late watching a Movie, having a drink, typing on the laptop not even thinking that lack of sleep can kill us, makes you want to go to bed doesn't it, night night, sleep well or sleep forever, you decide !

I love this topic. I'm not shocked at all that it's sleeping that is the largest risk factor. Now, if only the world would be more accomodating, maybe a good nights sleep would come quite a bit easier to many. Well written.

HealthTip, I'm not sure what you'd make of it, but you seem to be capable of about anything! However, for now a yes or no would work, my arm is getting tired, and it is hard to type with one hand in the air. :)

Thank you, HT! I have like a Blackbelt in Napping! At last count, I should live to be 180! Great information, my friend. I wish we could have siesta here in the States...What are they trying to do to us here, kill us?

I suffered sleeplessness before and who didn't right! But, as you said, i just trained myself in time to sleep or force myself to bed. I have rules now regarding that like not having tea or coffee after a certain hour in the evening. I drink only juices, yogurt or water before bed time. There is another fact which is to time your biological clock by going to bed in a specific hour every night. This way, my body feels really sleepy at a certain time... Now, thank God, my health got better and I became even more efficient at work (I used to nap on my desk lol). Thanks my friend for this wonderful hub...

So you are telling me that my insomnia is not good for production? Is that why I blank out in class? Well done, I definitely learned a lot--I will try and do better with sleep after this weekend, as I have serious gaming obligations in my clan/guild--'Borderlands' w00t! On a most important note--this is a very serious topic which you handled in such a communicable way. Great hub dear friend.

Okay, okay, I'll go to bed. Was about to log out when I saw you have a new hub. Now you made me late to bed. LOL j/k. Great hub as usual Art. When I was working in an auditing firm, sleep was a precious commodity we often neglect. Nowadays though, I'm like sleeping 6 to 7 hours a day plus napping in the afternoon. I'm getting lots of sleep, except when I'm in hubpages (LOL). Good night friend and sweet dreams :).

Sometimes I do get insomnia and as you pointed out in your hub, I go and peep into the refrigerator. Midnight snacks become a frequent thing and then there is the battle of the bulge and weight problems. Thank God I am not having a sleep deficit these days.

i definitely need to get more sleep. i don't have trouble falling asleep, but i am a very light sleeper. i have like super hearing and swear to god i could hear a flea turning over on a cotton ball. if fleas slept on cotton balls, i mean. anyway, if something wakes me during the night, i just lie there and try to go back to sleep and then when i can't i get up, sleep-starved for another day, err.

good article!

Cosette my lovely lil friend how nice to see you here but how bad to hear you have sleep prolems. If you can't sleep sometimes it's best to get up, have a bit of a walk around the house, stretch your body then try again, hope you are well !

As always, great info. Another one of those viscious circles - more stress = less sleep which = more stress that we let ourselves get into. I'm a recovering sleepless addict - hate to sleep, I could be getting something done. Getting better though and seem to have found a new "sleep #" I wake without an alarm at exactly 7 hours - and I'm not putting on weight anymore. Thanks for shouting out the benefits!
