Sleep Apnea Information – ASAA - American Sleep Apnea Association

Sleep apnea is considered a big sleep disorder that stops proper breathing during sleep. There are many types of sleep apnea the most common is Obstructive sleep apnea and other being obstructive and central type. Due to problem of the breathing pattern people often get up during the night resulting in disturbed sleep

Some of the Common symptoms and side effects of this disorder are , impotency, and weight gain and cardiac problems and amnesia (loss of memory), blood pressure.

The organization ASAA is a group of people who treat this disorder and provide support groups all over the country for the benefit of patients, and they also have online website forums which are used for sharing sleep apnea information, regarding their condition or regarding the disorder in general. The American Sleep Apnea Association is doing its share to widen the scope of research to be able to battle this disorder and bring relief to its patients.

Apart from research and community efforts, the major treatment for this condition vary from patient to patient. Primarily depending on the severity the patient is asked to make some simple lifestyle changes, sometimes oral appliances that aid in better breathing, use of the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is the most common and effective so far.

The machine works to push the air through the nasal and airway passages at a pressure that prevents the collapse of the air passages during sleep thus helping in the patient having a continuous supply of air during sleep. Sometimes surgery is the only recourse in these cases.
