What is Sleep Apnea?

It is a common sleep disorder in which a person briefly and repeatedly stops breathing (pause) for short periods of time during sleep. Breathing pauses (few seconds or minutes) often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. It is then followed by normal breathing with a loud snort or choking sound.

What are the risks involved?

People suffering with the disorder are prone to heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure.

Risk factors:

  •  Although women and children are also affected by the disorder, middle aged men are affected more than women and children
  • Overweight and obesity, smoking, use of alcohol or sleeping pills, and a family history of sleep apnea increases the chances of developing Sleep Apnea.

Symptoms:

  •  Heavy snoring and gasping or choking during sleep, along with extreme daytime sleepiness are the common symptoms of Sleep Apnea..

A test called polysomnography is performed to test Sleep Apnea.

Treatment:

  •  In Obese and overweight people, a small weight loss can relieve mild cases of sleep apnea.
  •  Quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills may provide great relief.
  •  Avoid sleeping on your back may be of great help.
  • A mechanical device that helps to maintain a regular breathing pattern by increasing air pressure through the nasal passages is found useful.
  • Surgery may be needed in very serious cases.

Hi premsingh,

I have personally experienced this myself. I sometimes wake up out of a sound sleep because I can't get any air. It's like someone flips a switch and I completely stop breathing.

I wrote a hub during the HubChallenge about sleep apnea. It is a serious problem that often the person that has it doesn't even know about. It's up to love ones to tell them and have it checked out. You can read about my husband's experience in my hub. He has sleep apnea and didn't know it until I recorded him and showed it to him.

Thanks jayb23.

KCC, your assessment is very accurate. Majority of people don't know that they are suffering from sleep apnea disorder. I discussed this with my friends and found that none of them was aware of disorder and consequences. I'll visit your hub published on the same topic.
