Making a Home Out of Two Rooms

Someone on here asked how to organize a small home so I'm going to describe what my boys and I have done with ours so far.

My two sons and I have two rooms and share a kitchen, a laundryroom, and bahroom with our housemates, so making our two small rooms into a home was very important to us. With a limited income and the fact that we've been here less than a year it's a work in process.

Everything we get for our home will go into a small apartment, or cabin, when we are done collecting everything we need. A lot of what we have in my room is dual purpose. I sleep on a sofa/hide a bed, the endtable is the type that looks like a small cupboard and it holds our bath linens. An entertainment center doubles as kitchen cupboards along with a book shelf. I also store my ironing board and yoga mat behind it next to the wall. A square cafe' table triples as a dining table, kitchen counter, and desk,  A small chest of drawers is used for storing cooking utensils, breads and silverware while the top holds our microwave. Right now I have two mini-fridges stacked in the corner which i plan to exchange for an apartment sized refrigerator. Hooks next to the door hold our parkas and hoodies.

The doorway between our rooms had no door so I used a pipe as a curtain rod and it doubles as a closet for our hangable clothes. When the boys get a bunkbed I plan to get, or build, a wardrobe for those.

The boys room contains two twin sized beds (which i plan to exchange for a set of bunkbeds to give us more floor space). I found the plans for a bunk bed made of pvc pipe on line. Thier room has thier chest of drawers, with a tv on top of it, my dresser, with a hutch top that holds my cosmetics and our hygiene supplies, as well as my clothes. On top of the hutch our bed linens are folded in  sets and the linens are put into the pillow cases for the sets.  A lidded bin doubles as an end table and toy chest next to one bed, and the coffee table is in thier room for a place to play board games. A book shelf is used to store thier video games (in a cd folder), boardgames and books. Thier desk holds thier stereo and a small bin under it contains thier gloves, hats, mittens, winter scarves, etc.... An under the bed bin holds thier shoes and boots. A plastic laundry hamper with wheels is at the end of the other bed to make it easier to haul our things back and forth from the laundry room.

We also have laptops instead of pcs so they take up less room. I want to get flat screen tvs sometime so they can hang on the wall thereby freeing up much needed space.

To make the rooms feel clean (and maybe a little larger) everything that I could get is off white, white, or light blue, whatever isn't - can be painted or slip covered. I even covered all of our books with white paper and labled them. I cut empty cereal boxs at an angle and covered them with white paper to hold all of our appliance manuals and magazines. Instead of a filing cabinet all of our important papers are in expandable folders, in my back pack, ready to go when I am.

You can keep your holiday budget in check, because good things really do come in small packages. Just ask Carol Uber, owner of Home Sweet Home in Plymouth, who carries a large selection of little finds, such as the overwhelmingly popular miniature music crank boxes that sell for $6.25 each.

(ARA) - When you look out your window, what do you see: the cool gray steel of high-rise buildings ... or vast, open expanses of green land? You don't have to stick to an interior style that mimics your surroundings; especially if it doesn't suit your taste.
