Small Town Crime....

Living in a small town, has many benefits, one being, the crimes committed most often, are not as horrible as those that take place in big cities. That is one of the reasons young families seek out small town living while their children are young.

I remember when my three sons were young, two in elementary and the eldest in middle school, making the decision to relocate from a California metropolis to a quaint little town in central Oregon. At the top of our list, along with smaller schools, quiet, safe neighborhoods, was to find a place we would feel safe in letting them play like we did when we were kids. You know, innocently riding bicycles up and down the street, playing tag til all hours of the day, walking to school....alone, and going to our best friends house, without having to call once we arrived.

We now live in such a town, and I can tell you, I feel safe and that feels good!!!! Sure I always play it 'safe', by locking my doors at home and in my car, and if I am out and about in an area I am uncertain about, I keep alert and always scan my surroundings. I carry a cell phone, but here in northwestern Montana, cell phone coverage is iffy at best.

Just yesterday I looked on line to catch the local news from the city I had lived before moving here. My grown sons still reside there, so I like to stay atuned to their living conditions and environment. Most often, I do not want to really know, as it makes me worry all the more about their wellbeing.

Here are just a few of those "big city" crimes:

* Suspect Arrested in connection with killing during North Sacramento melee

* Colusa DA files 11 manslaughter counts in fatal casino bus crash

* Convicted California sex offender faces new charges in Cambodia

* Highway 680 sniper victims climb to 45

* Reward offered In beating death of 97-Year-old woman

* Man accused of shooting ex-con pleads not guilty

* Deliberations begin in Fairfield double homicide trial

* Jury trial continues in double homicide case

* Ten years later, accused molester is freed

* Man accused of killing cellmate in Sacramento main jail

* Three arrested in connection with slaying of man found in trunk

Scary....so many killings, so much violence!

Now, take a gander at our Crime Log, printed weekly in our local paper, which by the way is circulated twice weekly, on Wednesday and Friday:

* A woman on Colorado Ave. reported someone broke her clothesline

* Someone was apparently driving on the golf course last night. Subjects were "spinning brodies" and appear to have broke one of the benches

* A woman on Scenery Road reported someone tore her gate off the hinges and left it on the ground

* A man on Terrace View reported finding his dog tied up in the horse trailer

* An employee at the dam reported a hound dog roaming around the visitor center; The dog appears wounded

* Two deer vs 1994 Dodge Caravan on Hwy 2 mile marker 63

* A yellow curve ahead sign at Pipe Creek Road and Lodgepole Way is down

* A silver 1990 Ford truck ran over mailboxes on Riverside Ave

* A woman on 5th Ave. reported someone stole a knife from her kitchen

* A woman reported losing her checkbook; It's orange with ladybugs on it, and she last remembers having it in her car after church

* A man on Vicks Drive reported his neighbor keeps shooting at deer and neighborhood animals with a pellet gun

* A person on Hemphill Road reported someone stole his irrigation headpipe; It is 6 inches in diameter and 40 feet long

* A man reported losing his wallet somewhere in town

And, it was reported, over the police scanner: "A bird of some sort, we think it's a seagull, is flying around the Elks Lodge bar and we can't catch it, what should we do??!!"  ... within one minute, the police arrived, captured the wild creature and all was good at the bar again!!

Ah yes, small town living has many benefits.  Feeling safe and sound, knowing our police force can capture a crazed bird within a matter of moments, makes me feel safe....very safe!!

Post note: I think Mayberry even had more crime then we do.

Fantastic! Oh to live in a safe place! I also live in a small town, but once I got a look at the online sex offender log, it's amazing how many there really are within 5 miles of us.. at least a dozen. I loved the scanner report..the gate was off its hinges! What a hoot! thanks for this great hub!

Wow Candie, I know what you mean about the sex offender lists. Seems no matter how small the town, there are sex offenders everywhere!! Sad but true. I think I will keep doing update hubs on our crime...sometimes it is so hilarious, it seems made up!!

I'm giving a laugh-of-the-day award and you win, MFG, with the report about the irrigation headpipe. FORTY FEET LONG?! How in the world do you get clean away with something like that? Four guys standing at ten-foot intervals walking down the middle of main street? A fifty-foot pickup truck? If your local Sherlock Holmes ever solves this one, please, please, please let me know!

Good morning Meg, thanks so very much for you sweet/kind words!!! I really love your feedback, it is very encouraging!!! I lived in Oregon too, for about 11 years, first in North Albany then moved to the small town of Waldport on the coast. I can say after about 9 years, I started missing the sunshine, blue skies! Thanks again for taking time to read and comment on my hubs!

Thanks Elnyjo, I love taking pics and am never without my camera!

I'm with Meg - this definitely gets the laugh-of-the-day award, as well one for warm-fuzzies! I *love* small towns partly because of what's considered "crime". ROTFL!

Thanks!! I know what a hoot!! The first time I read the crime log, OMG I laughed so hard I almost burst a blood vessel!!! The paper it is printed in weekly, is also free and sits in a big stack by the door of our one grocery store :-).

I know you're not making these things up. I go visit relatives in a small town and take a look at the log in their newspaper, same emergencies that require the whole police force to assist in!

I dream of that, I live in a small town but per capita our county has the highest crime rate in NC . Everything just goes unsolved.

You have no crime because no one can go OUTSIDE! Jeez, it looks cold there. Of course I'm in sunny Mesa, Az so just about every place looks cold to me. Surprisingly Mesa has a small town feel in a very big city location. I like having the best of both worlds, but when I retire, I'm moving to a small town in Colorado. Then we can swap snow storm tales.

I loved your story. I live just outside Baltimore (the crime here is jaw-dropping and I grew up in NYC), and with two very young kids and a brutal commute to work, living in a small town sounds like the perfect antidote. It's like I always say: Baltimore - all the crime of New York, without all that pesky culture.

deeannafc - You get my laugh-out-loud award of the day for that last line (above) about Baltimore. Priceless!

Great story! I grew up in a large city, but began raising my family in the country with the closest small town at 20 minutes away. We moved to a small town as the children have grown older, but moved again, not because of the lack of crime, but because of all the gossip! I just love being in the country without anyone peering into my backyard!

Beth, thanks for reading and commenting on my hub!! We were just discussing, a few moments ago, about all the gossip that takes place in a small town...everyone knows everyone!!!! Crazy sometimes!!!!

Great hub. Reminds me of my hometown, though it is probably a little bigger. I remember doing those things when I was little and not having to worry about those things.

Thanks girls for stopping by to read my hub and comment.... so many folks can relate to small town living, as they grew up that way...it's always nice to get back there huh!? Rarely a horrible crime, I feel pretty darn safe. My only worry: the crime in the big cities where my three sons still reside....wish I could uproot them and bring them here with "mama".... :-)

Thanks Blue.... seems when you're raised in the snow, most end up missing it for one reason or another. I love living here with all four seasons... always wanted the snow when growing up...now I GOT IT :-). Thanks for stopping by Waren... our little town is certainly lovely and we often wonder what happened to that doggone bird!!! Too funny!!!
