What Insurance Should I Carry?

Here are some basics to think about for small businesses.

If you have an office or a place of business than you should have general liability insurance to protect yourself if someone slips and fall or if all your equipment gets stolen.  My broker recommended a $2 million dollar policy.  It was the minimum coverage amount required by our outsourced HR department to take us on as clients, but outsourcing HR is another Hub.

If you're incorporated and have a board, then you may want to consider Directors and Officers Insurance also called D & O insurance.  This protects people on the board of directors from certain suits from share holders or outside companies.

Probably the most important coverage is Employment Liability Insurance referred to as EPL insurance.  This protects against things like sexual harrassment and is a much for likely claim than D&O.

Errors and Omissions insurance  or E&O insurance protects against errors in your information that may cause a suit.  For websites, this can be an important coverage to have.  This coverage can be hard to find and is not necessary for all businesses.

Each industry has certain risks and premiums can vary significantly.  The best thing to do is to find a broker that covers companies in your industry to find the most appropriate types of insurance coverage.
