Smart Ways To Save
51
It is all too easy to get carried away and simply spend even with your best intentions to save. In our society today, we are programmed to think we need things we can actually do without so it's high time you get out of the trap!
Below are some very nifty ideas on how to stash away money and cut down on your expenses.
Distinguish Between Wants and Needs
The easiest way to save money is to learn to differentiate your needs and wants. Needs are pretty simple to identify and they are the essentials that you can't do without example rent, food, clothing and transportation. Wants are those things that enhance your life or put simply, they are the items most of us lust after. We don't need a lot of things but we want a lot of things. Have you ever heard yourself say, "I really need..." when what you actually meant was "I really want"? This is not to suggest that you shouldn't allow yourself to have the things you want. But you will do your wallet a huge favors by not deluding yourself into believing that a want is a need and busting your budget in the process! The right thing to do is to set aside an amount you think is appropriate each month for you to do just that. Having a "fun fund" brightens up your day without wrecking havoc to your overall financial situation.
Have a Personal Budget
It's impossible to be able to save money unless you know how much money you have coming in and how much money you have going out. Once you have prepared a budget of incoming money and outgoing money, you will be able to identify areas where you can save. It's just not possible to save money in the long term without having a personal budget. Remember to be realistic about it because making an unrealistic budget defeats the purpose
Have Separate Accounts
As soon as your paycheck comes in, transfer a fixed amount each month to your other bank account. Make that account your savings account and one that you promise you wouldn't touch unless it's an emergency or for that big purchase you are saving up for. You could start by saving a small fixed amount each time and then move on to putting in larger amounts later. You will find that saving money on a regular basis will quickly build up a store of reserve money and you'll feel motivated to save more. If you find it impossible to save money once you have it, consider having money deducted from your paycheck direct each month. This can be a great way to save money rapidly as once it is set up, you will not notice it is being collected and your savings will grow with no more effort from you.
Less Is More
Spend less. This advice is simple but yet this is the one thing that everyone tends to overlook. Review your spending habits carefully and you might be surprised how little indulgences that you took for granted can really zap your resources in the long run. A few usual common luxuries you can probably do without are newspapers or magazines deliveries and daily take-away coffee you buy before work. Consider bringing a flask of coffee to work instead. Say, if you spend $8 daily on your latte, you will actually save up to $240 in a month if you give that routine a skip! The best thing about cutting out these fringe luxuries is the fact that you won't miss them much. The next time you think about spending lavishly at a trendy restaurant, think again. If it's not a special occasion, a simple meal could have been just as delicious. Once you start looking for ways to spend less, you will quickly become an expert on cutting down your expenses.
Try Before You Buy
This goes a long way in helping you avoid those silly big impulse purchases. Before you buy items with big price tags, borrow, rent or try one out for some time before you fork out your hard-earned cash. Sometimes, you will find that the novelty wears off just after a week. If you are bored with it or determine that it truly is not something you need even during the trial period, you can be sure it's not worth it!
Make Sure a Sale Is a Sale
It's extremely easy to get into a sales frenzy but only buy when you are sure it's really a sale. Make sure you are not falling into a creative marketing strategy of the store to encourage you to spend your money without thinking. Remember, "Buy one gets one free" and "50 percent off" will only help you save money if the actual price you pay is lower than you would pay somewhere else for exactly the same product! And never ever purchase something just because it's cheap.
Try some of the below tips and you are on your way to becoming a money savvy person.
PLAN IN ADVANCE
By knowing what you need, you will be able to buy in larger quantities and save money.
GIVE STORE BRANDS CHANCE
You may find the quality is equal to more famous brands.
STOCK UP DURING SALES
When it is on sale, stock up! Of course this only applies to those items that you use on a regular basis. Please don't stock up on items you use once a year!
SHOP AT THE STORE THAT IS THE CHEAPEST OVERALL
Surveys have shown that there is sometimes as much as 10 to 15 percent difference on identical grocery orders at two different stores in the same area. Don't throw away your money just because it is your habit to shop at a certain store.
