What makes an ideal teen scent?

There are a lot of so-called young scents that have flooded the perfumery since the early 90s. Most of these contemporary fragrances are unacknowledged flankers of the competition. To the more perceptive nose, the newer scents don't seem to offer anything exciting. It'll tickle your senses for a few minutes  to over an hour then disappear from your skin completely. What seems to be common to most young fragrances is that they all display some form of lightness, an airy feel of freshness, a bit of sweetness here and there which sometimes come across as too fruity, too sugary to the point of being sickeningly sweet.

On the other side of the spectrum, some labels come up with paler versions of their eau de parfums. Add some water elements to the notes and voila! You've got a light scent that can be marketed to the younger audience. Where's the creativity in all this?

There are exceptions, however. Some labels, especially those who wouldn't dare compromise their name and reputation, craft some of the most desirable fragrances that truly fits the young people. It's not heavy – no essence of mom's and dad's signature scents. It mirrors the very character of teens today- so expect versatility and an ample dose of sparkling notes to pair with their feisty and go-getter attitude.

Some of the more popular designer scents created for the young market emanate from the top labels in the perfumery. So, what makes these scents click? Is it the perfume and all its glory – design, notes and flacon – or is it the marketing campaign that entices the young to purchase a bottle?

Let's find out.

Coco Mademoiselle

This perfume is said to be the modern day interpretation of Coco. This adoringly lush fragrance is Chanel's offering to the young market. It opens up with a nondescript essence of combined flowers, fruits and gourmand spices. The overall appeal is trendy and balanced. Who's the face of Coco Mademoiselle? Keira Knightley.

Curious

Curious is from the fragrance house of pop princess, Britney Spears. This scent was concocted in collaboration with fragrance powerhouse, Elizabeth Arden. The partnership sounds a bit unlikely, methinks. Other than being a celeb perfume, what's “young” about Curious? At first glance, the pale blue glass is an absolute attraction. As for the juice inside, it's floral, light, crisp and sparkling. It's a pretty, every day scent. The downside is longevity. Curious doesn't seem to last for hours.

Be Delicious

Be Delicious is apples and more apples in a bottle - succulent, refreshing and energetic. The sweetness may be a tad too jarring to some but if you fancy fruits, this one may work for you. The youthful appeal of this fragrance comes from the watery elements in the notes giving it a chilled apple cum cucumber characteristic.

These three are some of my personal favorites. More teen scents at discount perfumes online retailer, scentiments.com.
