How did Smithfraud Get On Your Computer
Two words - video codec. Although there are others ways, by far the most frequent way to get infected is through a fake video codec. When you download multimedia off the internet sometimes your video player will ask you to install a codec in order to play the file. You press OK, not thinking twice about it. Bad move. This is how viruses get on your computer. All of the following codec's are really viruses in disguise:
- BrainCodec
- PCodec
- VideoKeyCodec
Avoid these programs at all costs! This is why I always recommend running a real-time antivirus/antispyware program in the background when downloading files off the internet.
Smithfraud and the Windows Blue Screen or "Blue Screen of Death"
The most common characteristic of Smithfraud is the blue screen of death. But unlike the windows registry errors that cause the typical windows blue screen, this kind is a fake! It is intended to frighten the person into thinking their computer is severly damaged. Your computer is at risk but the blue screen is false. The following images are typically linked to Smithfraud.
How To Remove SmithFraud From Your Computer
A couple of things about Smithfraud. First off it can be quite a chore to remove on your own. The virus unleashes a storm of infections across your computer. You will need to go through and delete every single one of them. And get this - if you miss a single malicious file, Smithfraud will completely regenerate itself the next time you reboot!
Secondly most antispyware and antivirus programs cannot remove Smithfraud. The reason is the virus hangs out in some deeply embedded folders like your registry and start up processes.
