Beckett has been great for the Red Sox in '09

Who is going to fill out this rotation?

So it is now June 13, when all the baseball teams in the MLB are settling into grooves and know exactly who to count on and if not, know exactly how they are going to replace them. The Red Sox however, have one serious problem, (In the way most teams wish they had), they have to many good pitchers. The Red Sox Pitching Rotation is currently as follows, 1. Josh Beckett, 2. Jon Lester, 3. Tim Wakefield, 4. Daisuke Matsuzaka, 5. Brad Penny. That seems like a very good rotation with no problems, in fact, it is a great rotation with no problems, but...they also have two phenoms ready for the pros, Clay Buchholz, and Michael Bowden, as well as the seasoned veteran all-star John Smoltz who is back from injury. So...what do they do?

John Smoltz is Healthy and is just Waiting

The First Problem

John Smoltz is an 8 time All-Star who won the NL Cy Young Award in 1996. In 2002 Smoltz saved 55 games for the Braves and became only the second pitcher ever to have a 20 win season and a 50 save season. In 2002, Smoltz won the Rolaids Relief Award for the NL. Last year Smoltz became only the 16th pitcher to strikeut 3,000 people when he struck out Felipe Lopez on April 22.

This year Smoltz has gone 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 5 starts for AAA Pawtucket and not only does he say he is ready to be in the majors but said he doesn't know whether he'll make his next start for the Paw Sox or the Bo Sox.

Buchholz is Major League Material

Buchholz is Ready

Clay Buchholz has a complicated history with the Red SOx and his Pro Career. He started out great, like the video shows you, throwing a no-hitter in only his second major league start. In 2007, Buchholz went 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA for the Sox in 3 starts and 4 games total. He looked like a sure thing for last year. But, then Buchholz followed up his great first stint with a 2-9 record and a 6.75 ERA in 16 games with 15 starts.

The Red Sox slowed down his path to the pros by keeping him in AAA to start the 2009 season and so far this year he has shown unbelievable improvement. Currently, Buchholz is 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA through 11 starts, including one game where he took a no-hitter into the nineth inning.

Bowden is also waiting

Michael Bowden isn't a nobody

Very quietly and hidden behind Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden has made a name for himself in the Red Sox minor league system. Parts of last year and for one appearance this year, Bowden showed that he is ready for the pros.

This year Bowden has a 2.48 ERA in AAA this year and is 3-3. Although the 22 year old Bowden isn't a necessity on the major league staff and is easily young enough where the Red Sox don't have to seriously consider pulling him up yet, Bowden is an exciting option for the minor league system.

The Rotation's Future

As Far as it seems through the way the Red Sox have been handling the entire situation, a few things seem pretty clear. In fact there are a few predictions, (Or let's call them educated predictions) that can be made:

1. In Regards to the Current Staff, Only Lester and Beckett have completely safe jobs.

2. Daisuke Matsuzaka has had an absolutely atrocious season so far and although he has a relatively safe job because of how much the Red Sox pay him, he has a shot at losing his job with the strength of his fellow pitchers on staff. That said: Daisuke will never leave the rotation unless he suddenly gets "injured." Which is code for, plays bad and suddenly gets an injury, which in reality is probably nothing.

3. Brad Penny will almost definitly be traded, he is the hot talk of a lot of trade rumors, the red sox want to get a utility hitter, that can help Ortiz fill the DH role, and rumors as little as Nick Johnson to as big as Adam Dunn have surrounded Penny and the Sox.

4. Both Buchholz and Bowden will be pros at some point this year, but barring injury will probably never be regular starters in the rotation.

5. Tim Wakefield will do whatever the team wants...because he's the man.
