Getting Started

Selecting Equipment

Kick off things by foreseeing your customers and your revenue stream:

  • How much do you plan to invest in the machine?
  • What machine do you plan to get: refurbished, remanufactured or brand new?
  • Where will you put your machine?
  • How many and what sort of people will be using the machine, and during what hours?
  • What products will they likely look for?
  • How much will they be prepared to pay?
  • What customers' payment scheme do you plan to implement (cash, token, or card)?
  • Will there be long gaps in the coming of people using the machine (for example school holidays)?
  • What and who is the competition, what do they offer, and what do they charge?
  • Is there a convenient and available power supply nearby?
  • If needed, is there a convenient and available water supply nearby?

DIY or Contract Operation?

Maintaining and servicing your vending machines efficiently and cost-effectively is vital. There are two main options to consider:

Contract Operation?

Contract operation means the operator takes charge of installing, supplying, maintaining and servicing them under contract. The operator is the source of all ingredients and products, and is also responsible for filling and cleaning the machine, plus accounting for the cash takings.

The vending specifier and the operator both agree on what prices to assign on the vended products. The contract will have to specify too whether the operator is to be paid straight from total cash sales or through a separate service charge.

DIY Operation?

This means an entity will take charge of replenishing, cashing and tending its vending machines.

This is for:

... those who plan to sell “just add hot water” meals.

... for an organisation that has a dedicated staff, who will control ordering and storage, cleaning and servicing, as well as accounting for and banking the cash takings. DIY owners need to take note that the Food Hygiene Regulations has laid out strict guidelines for the hygienic operation of food and drink machines.

Also applicable to your point about convenience . . . vending machines save the time and fuel needed to leave the workplace to find a snack, a coffee or lunch.
