Snoring appears as a result of obstructed breathing. A clinical study has revealed that 45 percent of normal adults snore occasionally and 25 percent are habitual snorers.

However, snoring can become a real problem if it starts interfering with the sleep quality of an individual and with your relationships.

Not having adequate amount of sleep may also have an adverse effect on a person's health. Therefore, it is very essential to get the problem of snoring treated at the earliest. Snoring surgery is one of the options you have when you come to the point that no other solution works for you.

Nowadays you have different options for surgery including a new method which involves laser and is more convenient!

Snoring Surgery as Treatment

Treatment of snoring depends on the diagnosis. A proper examination will show whether tonsils, infection, deformity or nasal allergy causes the snoring. Many otolaryngologists offer various treatments for snoring.

There are many types of stop snoring surgery such as Uvulopharyngopalatoplasty (UPPP), Somnoplasty, Injection Snoroplasty and Tongue suspension procedure to treat snoring. However, snoring surgery is considered as the ultimate solution to get rid of the snoring problem. The first option a physician may resort to is that of snoring medicines.

Types of Snoring Surgeries

1 Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): This procedure involves tightening of the flabby tissues and palate that expand in the air passages.

Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty (TAP) is another type of snoring surgery and is also used to treat sleep apnea. However, it is not effective in treating snoring caused by blockages at the base of the tongue.

2 Somnoplasty: It is a type of snoring surgery that treats upper airway disorders that include chronical nasal obstruction, habitual snoring and obstructive sleep apnea It involves removal of tissues of the soft palate and uvula. In comparison to other surgeries, somnoplasty makes use of relatively low levels of radio frequency.

3 Injection snoroplasty: In this type of surgery, the medication causes a stiffening of the palate tissues. Approximately 80 percent of the patients who had injection snoroplasty noted a substantial reduction in snoring.

It should be noted that this type of snore surgery is not recommended for treating sleep apnea. The process involves the use of topical anesthetic spray and the injection of roughly 3 cc of Sotradecol, introduced through the oral route into the soft part of the palate.

Preliminary researches have suggested that injection snoroplasty is safe and has a higher rate of success. It is also less painful than other surgeries. The main drawback of injection snoroplasty is that it treats only uvula tissues.

4 Tongue suspension procedure: It is also called Respose system and is relatively less invasive. It relaxes the base of the tongue during sleep. This in turn prevents it from falling backward and blocking the airway. The FDA approved this form of surgery in 1998. It is done as an outpatient process under total anaesthesia. This procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Generally, surgery to stop snoring is the most effective snoring solution in patients suffering from nasal obstruction. The results of surgery mainly depend on the skills of the surgeon and between the anatomy of a specific patient's airway and the type of procedure performed.
