Strap On and Get Out: Snowshoeing in Breckenridge
70
Although Breckenridge is well-known as a quaint Colorado ski town, visitors should also know that there are plenty of outdoor activities available that don't have to be accompanied by a pair of skis or a snowboard. In fact, Breckenridge hosts some of Colorado's most exciting snowshoeing areas that offer a whole new way to play in the snow. Snowshoeing is a great alternative for those who don't ski or snowboard, want to mix in a different type of activity, or are just in the mood for a break from the slopes. If you're up for strapping on a pair of snowshoes, grabbing some poles, and getting out in a fresh blanket of powder, you're well on your way to a fun-filled day.
- Who Can Snowshoe? Snowshoeing is the perfect activity for you to do alone, with a friend, or with the whole family. It's the perfect sport for all ages and all skill levels. Literally, if you can walk, you can snowshoe. It's up to you to choose if you'd prefer a leisurely walk in some of the more forested areas of Breckenridge or if you'd prefer a more challenging climb up a peak.
- What Gear is Required? If you're just getting out to explore some of Breckenridge's backyard, you'll be fine with just a pair of snowshoes, poles, and a supply of water. While snowshoes can be purchased, most ski shops in Breckenridge will rent them out for the day. Just be sure to get the right fit for your height and weight, grab a pair of poles for balance, and suit up with a hat, gloves, and warm clothes. If you're planning a more challenging day, however, you'll want to bring a day pack filled with layers of clothes (once you get moving you may want to shed some of your heavier layers), extra water, and energy-filled snacks. You might even pack a picnic lunch to enjoy once you've found a good stopping point. If you're still acclimating to the altitude, be sure to keep yourself hydrated and take it slowly. You might want to choose a hike that's low in elevation gain on your first time out. You can always go back for a more strenuous hike once you're used to the thin mountain air.
- Choose Your Destination. Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center hosts 30 km. of trails for all levels of snowshoeing. Near Peak 8 Base on Ski Hill Road, this area is right on Breckenridge's free bus route. Equipment rental and guided tours are available. Similarly, Gold Run Nordic Center (off Tiger Run Road at the Breckenridge Golf Course) and Frisco Nordic Center (on Hwy. 9) also offer expansive terrain for varying skill levels and equipment rental. You might choose a guided tour if you're a first-time snowshoer or just want to learn about the area as you make your way along the trails. Of course, if you'd rather attack the trails and explore on your own, there is snowshoeing in almost every corner of Breckenridge - you might just stumble upon a trail from the back door of your Breckenridge rental! Just ask around-shop owners or locals will surely point you in the right direction.
Snowshoeing is quickly becoming a more popular sport due to the peaceful nature of getting out and taking a walk in the snow. You're bound to find peace and quiet in the woods as you are the first to make tracks in deep, fresh snow. Be sure to take your camera along to not only capture snowy pine trees, but to be ready in case you are lucky enough to wonder upon elk or other wildlife.

Gee, I never thought of snowshoeing, but I think that could work out for my group. We have differing levels of fitness, but we could start out slowly. Thanks for letting us know what we will need to pack in order to have a snowshoeing great time!
Snowshoeing sounds like fun! I have never even been skiing before. One of these days I want to get out that way for a vacation!

I have little to no experience with snow since I live in Florida. While going skiing sounds like fun, I am hesistant to try it. I am planning a trip to the north for the winter, I will have to look into going snowshoeing instead. Thanks for idea!
