Ancient Fighters.

The History of Boxing.

Boxing has been around for centuries in one form or another. Carvings depicting fist fighting contests, or bare knuckle fights have been dated back to1350 BC..

These ancient fights had no weight divisions, rounds limits, or even referee and contenders who were motivated by money or/status and pride, would beat each other using only their fists, until one was knocked out! abandoned the fight! or was killed! These fights could go on for hours!

As early as 690 BC, the ancient Greeks officially made boxing also called pugilism a sport and was introduced at the Olympic games, these fights were generally gloved boxing bouts which were part of ancient Greek culture and fighters fought for prizes.

In ancient Rome, there were two styles of boxing, the first was adopted from the Greeks which was the athletic form of and was not as barbaric as the gladiatorial style which consisted of criminals and slaves being forced to fight and often volunteered in the hope to win their freedom. It became so popular, even non prisoners and high ranking officers and aristocrats started to participate.

Since then Boxong has become much more civilised, commercial and one of the most popular sports today.

Modern boxing.

Modern boxing evolved from Europe most notably Great Britain and In 1743 Jack Broughton drafted in a new set of 29 rules governing the conduct of bare knuckle boxing also called prizefighting and was re written to the Marquess of Queensberry rules.

The Marquess of Queensberry rules are a general accepted set of rules and codes in Boxing. These are used in both professional and amateur matches. Professional bouts are usually much longer than amateur bouts and can ranged from ten to twelve rounds, though, two, three and even four round fights are common for less experienced club fighters.

The fights took place in a 24 foot square ring when contests were fought in a roughly drawn circle on the ground. A ring was a small circle in the centre of the fight area where the boxers met at the beginning of each round. The first square ring was introduced by the Pugilistic Society in 1838 and unlike previous rings was surrounded by ropes.

The four basic punches in boxing are the jab which is a quick and powerful, straight punch,. The cross, a powerful, straight punch thrown with the rear hand..The Hook, a semi circular punch thrown with the lead to the side of opponents head and my favorite the uppercut, which is a vertical, rising punch thrown with the rear hand.... Right handed punchers are called orthodox style fighters, this is where the left hand is the lead. . A left handed boxer is called a southpaw and the hand positions are reversed.

The basic rules of Boxing. If a fighter is knocked down, he has to rise within 10 seconds or he loses the fight. No holding, headbutting, biting and hitting with heads, elbows or below the belt. These are declared fouls and can result in points being taken off the score cards or even disqualification. As always the referees decision is final.

"Bite of the century" was the most notorious biting moment when Mike Tyson bit a chunk from Evander Hollyfields ear resulting in an immediate disqualification which happened on 28 June 1997 at the the MGM Grand Garden Arena . Tyson later had his boxing license revoked and fined over $3 million. (video right).

The Gypsies who were a group of travelers were well known for their history of Bare knuckle fighting. Bartley Gorman was the U.K and Ireland champion and well known as the King of the Gypsies.

Kevin Ferguson, or better known as Kimbo Slice is a street fighter from Miami who appears in many fights which appear on the Internet. These fights are consensual so it's all technically legal. Kimbo has quit street fighting and is now training to become a professional martial arts fighter.

Today Boxing comes in all shapes and forms, from The traditional styles to the many illegal bare-fist fights which take place every day in our Schools and back-yards for financial, status or peer pressure reasons.!

Professional venues are hired illegally because promoters, managers cannot get a licence due to legal issues!

The Dangers of Boxing are cuts! broken bones, mainly ribs which can be fixed, but constant blows to the head can cause blindness, internal bleeding, brain damage and death can't! Constant bangs to the head destroys the most precious thing in the world, your brain!.

Micheal Watson is a former Super middleweight boxer from England who suffered a severe brain injury at the hands of a fellow fighter Chris Eubanks (video) and ended up in a coma for 40 days and spent many years in hospital and is still making a slow but progressive recovery to this day.

Muhammad Ali who is world famous ex boxer suffers from Parkinson disease and its rumoured that he has this disease as a direct result of being constantly punched on the head! although this has never been proved. Mohamad video highlight's.

Love or loath boxing its definitely here to stay and if your thinking, or know someone who wants to be a boxer, then make sure they are aware of all the possible dangers, as-well as the great financial and personal rewards and to go down in history as one of the greatest fighters in the world would be something of a great achievement..

As an ex Boxer, (nothing professional) i did my fair share of training and sparing than actually contest, and a coincidence or not, most boxers i knew, and now know, who have been in the game for a very long time are not the most smartest guys on the block! "no offence" but they are definitely some of the nicest. Is it just a coincidence or is it the constant blows to the head?

Great hub, compu-smart! I doubt if young people today know how popular boxing was in the late 1880's and throughout the 20th Century. It was really, really big! My grandfather fought 440 bouts, under the name of Shamus O'Brien, from about 1909 to the 1920s, beginning his career fighting bare nuckles. He fought in numerous weight classes, including featherweight. He fought the great Benny Leonard at least three times. I was not alone in listening to the "Friday Night Fights" during the 1940s on radio, and later on TV. My favorite was the Joe Lewis versus Billy Conn fights. Lewis was a great champ.

William..I was thinking all about Shamus O'Brien while preparing hub! I too used to listen to the radio broadcast fights, mainly of Tyson..It was a shame because i would wait months for a fight and it would be over in seconds!:/

bloggerdollar...Thanks for clearing the mistake, 30 seconds would be a nice break lol..maybe enough time for a cup of tea in between rounds!! lol ......I hope you are making use of your bag! and its not just hanging around waiting for a beating;O

A most comprehensive and detailed hub. I think there is a place for society for boxing, particularly when controlled and when young boxers are protected (by equipment and by rules).

Yes. head protection can protect against many of the injurys boxing can entail..But for kids to take up boxing, and have permanent punches to the head can not be a good thing!
