A Brief History of Soccer
Before we delve into the technical aspects of effective Soccer Coaching, it is beneficial for Soccer Coaches to have at least some information about the beginnings of soccer.
Many ancient civilizations have played a sport similar to modern Soccer and there is no 100% certainty when and where soccer was started. However, one thing for sure is that the early "prototypes" that have later evolved into the beautiful game were played almost 3000 years ago and have traced as far back as 1004 BC. Many believed that the earliest form of the sport had its roots back in ancient China, where they played a game called "Tsu Chu". It involved kicking a leather ball with the feet and was mainly used as a physical fitness activity to train soldiers. Players were not allowed to use any part of their hands in this game. The goal was a net that had a hole strung between two bamboo poles approximately 30 feet high. A goal was considered to be scored when the ball had gone through the hole in the net.

Characteristics of a Great Soccer Coach
As we have identified earlier, coaches play a crucial role in a player's development, both on and off the field. This is especially so in the nurturing and coaching of young players where inculcating good values in them is just as important as educating them in soccer knowledge. Then what defines a great soccer coach? A great soccer coach would generally possess the following traits:
- A large bank of soccer knowledge in both the technical and tactical aspects. He or she must also have a good grasp of the rules of the sport before being able to effectively coach and teach his/her players
- Patience - Having the patience to coach and repeat the instructions if necessary, in order to ensure that every player in the team understands the rationale behind the drill or tactical play
- Well prepared- A great coach would always prepare well before every training session is conducted. The training session should follow a structured plan and there must always be an explanation for each training drill. Equipment must also be prepared together with enough refreshments (eg, Bottled water/Energy drinks) for the players to consume before, during and after practice.
- Motivator- When the team is facing difficulties during a match or practice, it is important for the coach to take the lead in motivating the team. Keeping team spirit alive works wonders in training and matches. Furthermore, since Soccer is a team sport, it is all the more important to preserve team cohesion and positive communication in order for the team to overcome difficulties and evolve into a really successful squad.
