I want to start my article by criticizing myself for calling football as soccer. Although I hate calling football as soccer I know that most of audience is Americans and what they call football isn't football. (As a sports admirer I watched American football matches and kind of like the game but I am against a game played with hands being called football:)
There are two kind of people soccer lovers and basketball lovers. What is the differences between those two games. (I can hear you saying: "One is played with foot, other with hands.":)
- Soccer is more of a team work. A team playing in great harmony is more likely to win over a team with one super star.
- Basketball is a game of superstars. One man can change everything. (Michael Jordan. No other word needed to say)
- Soccer is a game of strategy spread over all 90 minutes, leaves not much room for suprises.
- Basketball is a game of breaking points. The whole course of the game can change in last 10 seconds.
- Soccer can be played by anyone. It doesn't matter how tall or muscled you are. Every kid can dream of being a soccer star.
- Basketball is for big guys. If you are short you can dream of being a basketball critic.
- Soccer can be played everywhere. I remember playing with crushed coke cans as ball and goal made of two stones.
- Basketball needs equipment. You have to have good ball and a hoop at least.
- Soccer is an outdoors sport. You can play soccer in green fields or under snow.
- Basketball is an indoors sports. You have to find a good weather or a good place.
- Soccer is a continuous sport. You go out and play for 2 halves of 45 minutes without any period other than 15 minutes half time. You can only change 3 players (5 in some countries) so at least 8 of players remains on the field for 90 minutes.
- Basketball is played over 4 quarters and teams can take breaks and there is a circulation of players all the time.
As you can observe I am a man of soccer. If you have any more item to add to this list feel free to comment.
And yes one is played with foot other one is played with hands :)

Look, basketball is a team sport. You saw what the greeks did to the americans in the mondobasket 2006.Basketball is about tea, sport, not much around talant.
I accedently pushed some button. Anyway, I want to continue my comment. I hate soccer. You know why? because all you need is a little 1-0 to win it. In basketball, even if you lead by 20, you don't win for sure. I don't blame you for not noting it in your article. You think short guys can't ball.Really?! what about Iverson? What about Spudd Webb and Nate Robinson who won the dunk contest?Another thing, Nate Robinson blocked Yao Ming! Soccer sucks, basketball rocks.END OF STORY!
Basketball > Soccer.
1. Basketball requires skill and teamwork, not just running the whole field and kicking a ball.
2. Basketball develops strength.
3. Basketball is interesting. You can lead by 40 points and still lose the game eventually.
4. Basketball isn't boring. Sorry, but I can't stand to watch 90 minutes of a game where the scoring board can stay 0-0.
5. You don't need equipment for basketball. You can play basketball with a coke can and a trashcan, owned huh?
6. NBA > Champions league/mondeal/whatever.
You sir are an ass...basketball is a team sport. And since it is a team sport as such it takes a team to win a championship not just one man. And where do you get off saying you need good weather...for an indoor sport. JACK-ASS
I agree with you all the way!
Don't let these Yanks (I'm one too) throw you around. I agree with you on a lot of what you say. Basketball is also a team sport though, but you're right in saying that one player can take over a game. That's true in soccer as well, but triple teaming Kobe is a lot more effective than triple teaming, say, Leo Messi.
Great article on why Americans have a hard time getting into soccer:
Guys, i see that most of you has never even played soccer, so you have no idea how enjoyable this game is. you are like soccer is boring while there is still risk of loosing even when u r up 40 at basketball. have any of you watched b munich vs. manchester united champiouns league final game? in the last minute m. united scored two goals or have any of you watched czech republic vs. turkey euro 2008 game? Turkey scored 3 goals in last 10 minutes and beat Czech Repuclib 3-2. so if you have no idea about soccer, pls dont waste your time commenting about it.
i like soccor the most. it is so enjoyable.i play soccor most of the time at school.
So I was planning on commenting on a lot of points in this article. But all of you basketball lovers have already covered it for me. I was looking for information to write a paper contrasting and comparing soccer and basketball... You've all made good points and I thank you. (:
While I personally enjoy playing basketball more than soccer, I have still have great respect for both sports - they really are alike more than they are different. The strategies of both sports are remarkably similar. My guess is that we Americans prefer basketball to soccer 1) because of our short attention spans (90 minutes + no timeouts) and 2) because to be honest, basketball does work better on television. Plus, the fact that there are more (American) superstars in basketball makes it appeal more to us. But I can't speak for everyone since I do live in the South, where soccer is relatively new compared to elsewhere in the country.
Bottom line: They're different, but both take an enormous amount of skill and athleticism to play. Anyway, we all have our personal preferences, but who can judge whether one sport is "better" than the other?
soccer is the most sport out of every sport the requires the most skill
FCUK U...short people can also dominate...look at chris paul..hes been performing well..Come man these two games are just amazing, they cant be compared
I agree with the Articcle writer soccer is waaaaaaaaay better thank you for saying that at least someone Knows the truth and people please don't say bad words on here. Thanks!
FOOTBALL AND SOCCER ARE 2 AMAZING SPORTS BUT I FEAL THAT BASKETBALL IS A WAY BETER SPORT , I PLAY BOTH SPORTS ON AN COMETITIVE LEVEL AND BASKETBALL IS MORE CHALLENGING IN A WAY , IT BURNS U UR MORE , BUT SOCCER IS A GAME OF SKILL AND PACIENCE WHILE BASKETBALL IS A GAME WHERE U NEED HAND AND EYE CORDINATION , TO GET THAT BALL INSIDE THAT LITTLE WHOLE , WHILE DEFENDED , , BASKETBALL IS A GAME WHERE ALL PARTS OF THE BODY IS NEEDED INCLUDIN FOOT AND HAND , MIND AND THE REST OF THE BODY , BUT SOCCER IS ONLY FOOT AND BODY ,BASKETBALL WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST AN ITS TIME PEOPLE REALIZE IT. OH AND IN MY COUNTRY SOCCER IS CALLED FOOTBALL , THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL MAKES NO SCENCE , WHY U CALL IT FOT BALL AND U USE UR HAND
I like to play basketball, But you know what you cant choose between soccer or basketball. Though the writer, i must say is ignorant and cant understand basketball at all. Football is a sport that can be enjoyable, yes but so is basketball(if you have the guts to take challenges and workhard). Inspite of you saying soocer is a more team-oriented sport than basketball, there is actually no black and white answer to this either, both need team dedication. Both need Strategy, Me being a player and a coach for my School team, when you say strategy is evened out on all of the 90 minutes you dont seem to understand that in basketball every second counts. Also Who won Last years Nba finals? Celtics won.Against? LA Lakers. the lakers have all high flying superstars but Celtics won because of their dedicatioon and spirit. When you say Michael Jordon, I say Maradona, Pele and Such other footballers. Both games are the same if you are big and strong it gives and athletic advantage not only in basketball but soccer aswell. I am 6 Ft 2 inch but when still if a guy who is only 5 ft comes at you and tries his best and practices day and night, He will score. He will break the barrier and score, (trust me i know from expierience).
I fell i am wonderring of the point, None of them are going to win. Cause no matter what Basketball fans will have more in depth know how of basketball and football fans will be the same. The answer will be different for everyother person. So why not rest the case and have a big Foot ball and basketball Group Hug...
i live in britain and grew up on soccr for sixteen years until i swa and nba game so trust me when i tell you soccer is a joke compared to basketball
not to offend any basketball lover but coming from a counry in south america, most poor kids there play soccer mostly because they play with whatever is there, unlike basket ball where u need a hoop. plus the nba dream u have to be pretty tall while in soccer doesnt matter how tall u are. soccer is have to be fast, have stamina, and know how to dribble with ur feet. overall basketball is a good sport but it doesnt really surpass soccer. it is up there though
I simply don’t like basketball because you are barely allowed to touch the other player before the referee blows the whistle for foul. And also you are sent off after 5 fouls (I think?).
Basketball is one of my favourite sports but I love MMA and Boxing first then Football then Basketball
Preferred play soccer
Well, it's very true that a basketball game can be depender on a star player like Jordan. Soccer is more of a team work cause there are many players on the field, it's a more physical game, where the fouls come only from hard tackles or hard pushing not from just touching you, making that more a lady's sport. If you are not allowed to touch me (cause it'll be a foul), with the physical that i made from soccer, i can easily hold the ball and score every time, also take a foul everytime somebody touches me,lol. And even the rule that the opponent is not allowed to touch you while you are in the air trying to dunk or something, that makes it ridicolous... then I`ll try to dunk every time and I'll not lose the ball,I'll get fouled :P lolEven that it's hard to compare these sports, for the fact that they are probably the same after all, but SOCCER demands way too much physical and mental abilities than basketball. For ex. why they say in soccer, he passed the ball to you like with a hand. Cause it's way easier to pass a ball hard enough and accurate enough to your teammate with hands than with foot.
All sports are great in their way . Football is the most popular and basketball is great !
All you americans that say, soccer sucks, lets just say u hate the game cuz u cant handle it, in basketball has there ever been 2 minutes without the game being paused, give me a break. if u played for 90 minutes ud just give up cuz u cant handle that much running, in basketball come on 46 minutes takes them 2 n a half hours to finish, how many breaks do u get??.frm the games ive played, some of you americans would never, playing in rain on 20degrees with field full of water and mud, wearing white uniform and at the end, turns black, please dnt even say nuthing anymore, u gota have love for the game to do that, i duno wat kind of american fool would actually come out their house n play basketball,EXACTLY ;),soccer is dangerous basketball isnt, u get injured if a ball falls on ur finger n crap, while in soccer, legs can be broken, some end carriers, dreams, and for some like Cisse, leg breaking doesnt stop them frm doing what they love, 1, leg broken twice and still playing. yess soccer can be a low scoring game, thats y i dnt watch teams that i dnt enjoy watchin cuz i kno its gna be boring, same for basketball, id rather watch bulls kick celtics ass, then watch clippers lose by 40 points by heat or some $#!&
This is the most stupid debate ever...there is no comparison between the two sports...Football is sooo much better than basketball its a joke....BASKETBALL IS SHIT....full of lanky bastards running about who are not aloud to be touched....football on the other hand tests your stamina and endurance...your mentality and of course your skill and teamwork...football is renowned worldwide where as basketball is only really played in usa...i dont know how people can say that basketball is better than football when football is played in nearly every country in the world at an extremely competitive level...and in Europe..the best continent on the planet shows its dominance...also there is no hype about the 'basketball world cup'..thats if there is one...point provel...BASKETBALL IS SHIT....FOOTBALL ALL THE WAY...COME ON ENGLAND!!!!
soccer is the best if you think that it is easy than try running so much after the ball and yes you do have to use strategy to win and i am the best at it.
you have to be so much more athletic and skilled to play basketball for a living then soccerplayers have to be. ( i live in holland so i can now that). basketball is just waaaay better then soccer.
soccer is extremely boring . you are watching a game (90 Minutes)and only a max. of 10 minutes is exciting. so that means you are really screwing up your evening. basketball is so much better. you have to have a much greater body then for playing soccer... come on .. soccer.... my god .... how lame is that?....
I think soccer is better because it is an international game.
U said to play ball u have to be tall/ muscular, but its the same with all sports and with who you play with. If you can dribble and drive and if you have good reflexes, you are a very valuable ball player. The only time height would matter is if u played a 1 on 1 game with some huge beast. If u look at soccer, to be good, u gotta be fast and u gotta keep that speed for 90 minutes. So ya soccer players need stamina, but ball players are still cooler
wat!!!??? basketball is way better!! soccer is boring and its too hot outside, even though i play both bball is way betta..me and my friend are debating whether soccer is better than basketball and im pretty sure this site will help me. Basketball doesnt take much and in soccer u need like 22 ppl or sumthin vs. bball u only need 10. soccer takes talent...basketball takes heart, practice and dedication to be good at it...over all BASKETBALL is way betta...oh and my friend is like 4'7" and he can drop dimes all day no matta how tough or big the defense is!!!!
BASKETBALL>soccer!!![<3]
I agree with you.soccer IS a much better sport but in bball you dont need special equiptment, and there is team work but soccer has more. SOCCER is WAY BETTER than basket ball.
P.S. i totally agree with TheBoshian
I agree with all of you but i still like basketball better.
hey everybody...i just dont want to talk so much cuz maybe no more people see this topic...anyways BASKETBALL THE BEST..if u want to know why contact me at www.youtube.com/TheDarkKnight03
Both sports are totally great. Soccer has lots of fans and so as basketball. It's not really gonna matter where you wanna be, but eventually, its part of the entertainment and your interest. For me, I like both basketball and soccer.
basketball rules all!!!! no doubt about it!! my school got 3 city champs this year and we hav a wall of banners cuz we da best...anyways basketball can be played by anyone you dont really need strength or height. besides tall people are slow short people are quick and aggressive. soccer sucks...even th0 i play. you are outside u get a shorts tan its humid outside and theres no clean bathroom unlike in a gym bball da b0mb member dat!!!
I AGREE WITH YOU ALL THE WAYYYYY BASKETBALL SUCKS YOU RUN BETWEEN TWO HOOPS AND FIFTEEN FOOT COURT WITH SOME STUPID BALL. YOU WANT CHALLENGE TRY RUNNING 50 FEET OF FEILD AND YOU DRIBBLE THAT STUPID BALL WHEN WE ACTUALLLY STRADIGIZ AND SHOW OUR SKILL, SO PUCK YOU SON OF A DOUCHE BASKETBAL STANK SHIT AND SOCCER IS LOVED BY 75% OF THE WORLD LOVES SOCCER OR SHOULD I SAY FOOTBALL ALL THE WAY SO SCREW YOU BUDDY (NUFF SAID)!!!!!!!!!!X( X( X( X(
I was going to take the time and address everything that was used to open the dialogue, point by point but to do so would be embarrassing. Some of these comments are as baseless as the morons in the stands at soccer games burning down the place and trampling the fans. What's worse moreso then anything above and beyond, is the tolerance for racism within these games. If a basketball fan so much as throws a peanut as sign of aggression he is removed from the arena front row or not.
Soccer on the other hand embraces this, the corporate sponsors continue to funnel in money to the racist flag waving and even Player harrassment where they throw bananas on the fields, as the entire stadium erupts in OOOOh, OOOh, OOOOh mocking monkey chants.
This is not a sport of harmony outside of what happens on the fields. These are just countries and their racist residents excuses to come out and further their racists causes. They probably dont even like the game, could it be they just want to see their respective(tough word to use here)country win. How many fans have died at basketball games?
Somebody, please look up how many people have died at soccer games.
Really not an interesting sport to me especially after watching what happens at these games on tv.
Do I really want my kid understanding that level of agression , FROM A "Fan" of the game.
By the way let's be real sports played at the highest level require skill if your paid millions, thanks for clearing that up guys but take ourselves out of the equation and really observe:
1- Do u really need as many breaks or player changes if you are not on the move constantly...if the soccer ball is at the other end of the field is everyone participating...i dont think so. Have i seen soccer players standing around as the ball is kicked back and forth for awhile between 2 players. uh yeah.
2-Any game can change in the last second forget 10 seconds(just another baseless point)
3-I have seen bottomed out milk crates nailed to the wall and kids were having a blast
4- can you really play soccer in the snow(lay off the head butts)
5- penalty kicks, players subs a 15 minute halftime disqualifies this as a continuous sport(whatever that was supposed to prove). If the intent was to prove who is more athletically inclined...I would have to say BBall players there is just so much in the way of coordination between your feet and hands while controlling a bouncing ball and trying to fight for that lil open area to get a shot off at a goal that is probably 1/300th the size of a goalie net(i really don't know the ratio, but think of it fellas)
all im saying stick to what matters...."Harmony" and Soccer is still in the dark ages(so to speak)
In fact if you are a real soccer lover how do you feel about the racism displayed at the events where there is coporate sponsorship. Hope i didn't offend anyone. Are you really a fan of the game or the idea that your country gets display some sort of dominance.
this article is not neutral. u basically said soccer is better
I believe with all my heart that soccer is one million times better then basketball. Basketball is a game for sissies plain and simple. What kind of a sport is it if you can't push someone over to get the ball?If you ask me basketball is the sport for people who are afraid of a little pushing. Most would start argue about the fact that in soccer a little push makes them fall over and fake an injury....that would be only the men though, so I will push them aside for a bit. If you watch a girls match you will never see that. If we get pushed over we get right back up again.
one last thing. What is the most popular sport in the world?...oh thats right ...SOCCER
The thing that I don't like about basketball is the first three quarters don't matter. The last 4-5 minutes is really all you need. And basketball is about superstars. The Houston rockets were a much better TEAM than the la lakers werein the playoffs but they lost because Kobe bryant is just so freakiN good
I like both sports, they are both team sports... that depends is a player is willing to give out the ball, and I really think soccer needs more fitness, who can run a big field for 90 minutes? in basketball you jus run from one side to another and stand till someone throws the ball at you, but I really like scores in basketball, i dont like playing 90 minutes for just 1 goal, and yes there are short players in the NBA just a few if you, short guys can play ball
but not in the NBA some of them get in, theres a 6' barrier on the NBA. No sport sucks, some may liek basketball, and some may like soccer that depends in your taste. (I hate golf
Such an idiot '' at basket the whole game can change in 10 seconds'' , ehm? no? '' no teamwork''? what the hell?
basket is for big guys? there is an nba star he is 1.50 tall and can dunk you faggot
this article is bias and untruthful
basketball can be played anywhere theres a hole...
ok but mj himself played with a trashcan and a rock when he was little. basketball is also a team sport and gets you alot more tired than soccer...
soccer is more diffacult to master ...
or at least to me it was. both are great sports,, as a whole and to the world but the real winner is basketball because of all the varieties their is of the game ..
as far as streetball soccer gives basketball alot of inspiration and visversa but over all bball is better bitches!
Soccer requires much more skill. Two time MVP steve nash even said that a game of soccer is much more physically draining than a game of baskeball. Hakeem olojowon only played soccer and he picked up a basktball at the age of 18 and started dominating and became one the greatest player of all time just like that. To be good at basketball is easy, you just need to be lucky and be 6'6+ and able to run with decent footwork. You can go to europe right now and pick up a bunch of tall kids that play soccer, spend just hald an hour explaining the rules of baskeball and they will probably be able to beat guy that arn't so tall but have been playing basketball their whole lives. Could that happen vise a versa? Hell no, because soccer requires much more skill, and stamina. Bball is mostly about being tall.
it doesnt mater wat anyone here says both sports are the same ghd only diff is using hands and feet... i play both sports at a division one college team.. i love soccer more though only because its been in my family
Londoner!!!!!!!!!!! You don't know what you are talking about. For the record basketball is the largest sport i both China(1,3 million people), Greece, Serbia and it's the second biggest sport in almost every other european country despite Sweden where Hockey takes place nr.2. So don't post in your comment that basketball only is played in USA.
As an exptreamly dedicated soccer player who could play all day never get sick of it and defend it to me grave you are very wrong about most of what you said. I play basketball and don't really like the sport becuase of the way the fouls are but i have a high respect for the game. Playing both sports at the same time i can say that basketball is very much about strategy. While they have plays in basketball there is still alot of thinking involved. The game moves so fast that you constantly be paying attention to everything. Soccer also takes alot of physical streangth to play and not everyone can play it. I really love soccer and would take it over basketball anyday..but your way wrong about the things you said. give it a chance!
I can't say 1 is better than the other but which do you feel involves more phyical contact.
soccer above the all
period...
b ball is fag tag what is the average amount of fouls in a game. soccer is a game for short and tall ya there are short b ball payer but the taller ones have the advantage take me for example i made vasity soccer and i am 4 10 and a freshman lets see a kid 4 10 make a b b ball varcity team as a freshman. get owned
I totally agree with Gokay Deniz. Soccer isn't called "The World's Greatest Game" for nothing.
soccer
Moral of the story: Long, short, fat at the end of the day..."Will" shall always prevail. What makes both of these sports popular is Preference. The players who have dedicated themselves to taking their respective sports to an even higher plain(which one of us hasn't dreamed of beating mj or making an even more spectacular play then pele did back in the day)Should be respected. Its usually us the fans providing the impetus for discord. I am a bball fan do I care about soccer...yes, if it helps my bball players become more entertaining, lol. Fact of the matter is stick to what u know and figure out what it is you don't respect and why. Do that and change your life. God bless and good bballin to you all(My preference of course).
soccer vs. basketball
* soccer players can play under any circumstances. pouring rain, scorching heat, humid air, mud, and in the cold, sometimes the fields are so bad that there is always a danger of wondering wether or not you'd sprain your ankle if you're not careful where you step. whereas ballers play on a court, a smooth 15" court, sometimes even under a roof. place a baller in a soccer field and make them play for 90 minutes without being sure that they would get substituted and see if they survive.
*soccer is more of a contact sport, unlike basketball wherein you'd have to just touch someone else to get fouled
*soccer is harder to play than basketball, i mean, you have a goalkeeper tending the net and it takes more skill to dribble a ball with your feet than bounce a ball with your hands. you ignorant bballers, you might want to actually try to dribble a ball with your opponent coming right at you and pushing you, kicking your feet, elbowing you, tackling you, doing anything they can to get the ball
so in short, soccer rules
I like both football and basketball and they cannot be compared on "which one is better", they are totally different, if you wanna give opinion then give opinion on the difference on every aspect like...which one need more stamina etc.
PS: I would say basketball is played with foot, one step means a LOT in this game, hands are only one minor thing just to carry and put the ball inside the basket, we need to concentrate on our steps a lot. I said that coz I am a basketball player in a high level.
and please those who do not know shit about basketball, please stop saying that height is a must in basketball. like other games, it can also be played with any height with changes in the play technique. If you are short then take shots after getting screen (where your team mate blocks your opponent), be a 3 point sharp shooter, a ball handler also called as "play maker" who have to control the team on what to do next.....height are required for those who plays inside "under basket" areas etc...it has so many technique. height does not matter at THAT high level.
Nikki nikki nikki,
Its a shamed u actually use the word ignorant(to describe everyone else)when u have completely called urself out to be bashed but I wont take the racist soccer fan route I will let u off with but a small and meaningful message...Rules is a term of dominance sort of like the racist who occupy the stands in europe(shameful) soccer doesnt dominate in fact the ver bold move of moving what they consider a sex symbol(whatever his name is again)to an american team in order to promote the sport, set it on fire(like the stands in some games), give it a jolt, ok enough of that...the sport is dying a slow death and the game of bball is actually flourishing even in the markets abroad and some of the players overseas are better than the players here in the states(feel better). consider the game itself. Your talkin about almost 2 hours of running up and down the court and involved in every play(unlike soccer)and yeah there is someone gaurding the net but its at least 1/300th the size of a basketball rim. yu sound like another passionate soccer fan be truthful is it the idae that ur country dominates another or just a love of the game...................because its boring as hell, lol dont be mad although im sure you will be. btw do u also join in the racist monkey chants towards the black players, i hope not. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSERSSS
Ammericans are so frustared... the whole world don't care about USA opnion about soccer, you always try to convince all rest of the world how your sports are better. Soccer is so much popular than others sports that the Olympic Games stopped having soccer, because the Soccer World Cup is so or even more commended than it.
Nobody miss you guys, but I guess you still need to polish your ego as always. I guess most of Asia, South America, Europe, Africa and the rest of the world would agree with me.

Why are you comparing apples to oranges? Actually the stratagies and theories between the two sports are extreemly similar. I have recieved training and played both at pretty high levels and, as you may know, basketball player benifit greatly from playing soccer. For instance I have always said that indoor soccer is basketball played with your feet.
