Celebrating Friends

Anniversary ~ the celebration of the yearly return of a date, Gage Canadian Dictionary

The definition of friendship means something different for everybody but the main theme generally refers to when two people like each other.

A complete stranger can easily become your friend with willing participation but we are unsure whether to do or say anything to another. There is a inner fear of rejection, incompatibility or hostility and so people move on past each other without taking the risk to find out.

The work environment opens a door for opportunity to develop friendships that can lead to beyond the work place. People in the same apartment building or neighborhood is another place. There are many places and the latest is the Internet where I have made friends and ‘fans’ and even have interested suitors.

I came online regularly after a period of being offline for a bit. I had a friend invite me to a social site where I met a couple of soldiers. I admit, I like men in uniform. A man in uniform is just real spiffy in my eyes anyways. A military man and woman is something else altogether because they do a job that few people can do and they are as human as the rest of us.

I was unsure how best to proceed with them. I was sure they had their own home lives and tales to regale each other on about. I guessed the best way to go forward was to let them in on my own life and let my emails reveal the person I am and the friend I can be.

I sent emails about my bad cooking. I burn stuff really good and relayed these stories (almost regularly) to my new friends. I asked if they saw any smoke signals and how I always get teased about the need for the fire department to be on stand by. Somebody told me I should learn to use a BBQ.

I must admit that my response to this suggestion was, ‘ I can barely cook on a stove what makes you think I am going to do any better on a BBQ? Besides, it might blow up because something is burning." Nobody really knows what I will present for dinner because of my awesome burning skills. My children even have stories about surviving my cooking and still go on about me blowing up their eggs in the microwave. Seasons also have stories to tell and I shared all about activities and things I like doing which I wrote about in my ‘Mom and Son Activities’ hub.

I sent them short quotations about life, love and friendship plus jokes. Favorite lines from songs, like, ‘you can be my Hero baby, you can take my breath away’. I am a romantic fool. I have told tales of my sons mischievous antics and how they are always on the prowl or in trouble (not with the police) for mischief. Events that are going on around my community and my thoughts about it but I kept my emails about real life going on around me.

This Spring, we had our first Friendship anniversary. I do not know where these soldiers are deployed. They do not say too much but the virtual flowers, comments, and emails I have received from them, say a lot and reflect what I have shared with them. One girl friend of mine says, we are a live love story and she loved it.

I must say, we started out as strangers but we have come to know each other as best as allowed. I hold them dear and near and they know that. They are far from home but hearing stories of life, even from somebody as ordinary as me, helps bring a smile to them and that I think, is the best gift I can give them. I even tell them about HubPages!

I share this story with you in celebration for all our friends and newfound friends. We are such sociable creatures and it is so easy to just look up and over yonder and smile at that stranger and say Hi! All we have to do is be honest about who and what we are and not portray something we are not and we can, will and do have, the best of friends.

When i was in the Gulf it would have been great to have email pals...Or in Panama, Korea...Hawaii...It gets lonely waiting for letters that never come. I applaude you.

Hi Pest and GT! it is unfortunate there were not so many outlets available back then for friendship as there is today. We are friends now. Did you miss me? :)

I enjoyed your hub and you brought up a point that I am very passionate about,..sending letters to our Soldier's. Friends and new friendships are Awesome , regaurdless if it was someone we met on the street or in a store and even online. It's the words and thoughts and the sincerity that matter,..not the ability to see the face that saying them. HOOAH !!!

Hi ArmyInfantryMom, I am glad you enjoyed my article. Friendship helps bring smiles and lifts the spirits even if for a moment and it's nice to know a smile was left in place. Thank you for visiting and sharing your comments.:)
