Social Bookmarking for dummies

To make it as simple as possible, social bookmarking is making your favorites list open to the world.

The way this is done is by using tags on your favorite social networking site or sites. This is also done by marking (labelling) sites, articles or pictures as your favorites. Some sites have places where you can mark favorites, digg it, etc.

Making sure your favorites are shared with the world is accomplished by setting up the controls in your profile to 'share' (or make public) the information.

Social bookmarking can be done with news sites like digg, technorati or reddit. With digg and Technorati, you list of favorites and articles and videos you liked are available for others to view and read. Pictures can be shared at Flickr. Music can be shared at iLike or Virb. Virb caters to music types.

You can also set up your MySpace or Facebook accounts to show your favorites.

Start by social bookmarking websites, music, videos and photos. Blogs can also be social bookmarked be marked as well.Once you have managed to mark several favorites (social bookmarking) and shared them with others, then you can advance to the next level.

When you have some experience and feel more comfortable, you can consider using trip advisor to social bookmark places you have been or want to go. They even have colorful maps that you can share with others. If you are still enjoying pictures and have been to some nice places, you can share those on places like weather underground. If your pictures are really nice, then you can consider JPG magazine.

When you have mastered social bookmarking at that level, then you may consider sharing (social bookmarking) your family tree or family stories with myFamily.Once you are at this level and with specialized audiences, you may consider social bookmarking at sites like LibraryThing. At Library Thing you social bookmark (share) books that you own along with book reviews.

The list of potential sites and what can be social bookmarked is growing daily. Some sites like Orkut, and drupal are designed for a particular geographical areas. Navigating across language barriers is for those who have mastered social bookmarking across cultures and languages.

ProCW,

I appreciate you making the request. The whole area of social networking is still very new to many people. Your request was timely. I hope we have more interaction in the future. Good requests lead to good hubs.
