Social Effects of Obesity - What are the Social Effects of Obesity
85What are the Social Effects of Obesity ?
Obesity is fast becoming a major problem in USA and also the world. Even child obesity in America is reaching quite alarming proportions.
Do you know the difference between an overweight and an obese person? A person with a BMI between 25-29.9 can be considered overweight while a person with BMI of 30 or higher would come in the category of obese people.
BMI is a ratio of body mass and height. Here is the formula to calculate BMI in order to determine if you are obese or not:
BMI = body mass (in kg) / the square of height (in cms).
Below are a few social effects of obesity: Obese people might suffer from a lot from social insecurities and emotional suffering.
The Western society and even other parts of the world lay a lot of emphasis on looks.
Physical appearance is very important to people and hence obese persons might become the butt of jokes.
Overweight children might be ridiculed at school and have to face many psychological effects of obesity. Isn't this bad if children have to suffer from psychological effects of obesity.
We should take steps to curb child obesity in America and anywhere else in the world by trying to develop healthy eating and lifestyle habits ourselves and encouraging children to do the same.
Overweight teenagers might feel hesitant to socialize with other people as most people during this age are very self-conscious and might think bad about their weight.
People also have the tendency to view fat people as lazy and gluttonous which might not always be true.
These are just a few of the social effects of obesity. There might be many more social and psychological effects of obesity. Apart from social and psycological effects, there are health effects of obesity too. Many illnesses and health problems may result when people are obese or overweight.
What to do now? How to solve this problem? It may not be as difficult as you think. But we do need to completely change our lifestyle and eating habits.
Avoid junk food, get into the habit of exercising atleast 3 times a week, eat a lot of raw fresh and preferably organic fruits and vegetables are just a few of the changes we need to make and incorporate permanently in our lives. These habits are good for our health in general and not just for weight loss.
Imagine leading a healthy life and being free from a lot of illnesses and diseases associated with weight gain.
Imagine feeling high on energy and strength after you have inculcated proper eating habits in yourself and your children.

Obesity Cause - Behavior & Bad Habits Key Factors
Can your bad habits bring defeat? Changing ones normal daily behavior can make a huge difference along with sensible eating habits and exercise. If you are committed to loosing weight and keeping it off it is important to recognize your bad habits and give them da Boot!
Do you overeat? This is one of my bad habits. I cannot stress to you enough to read food product labels. Find out what a portion is and the amount of fat, protein, carbohydrates, and calories the product contains. Here is an easy way to cut back on portions. Dish up what you would normally eat. Then get a plate half the size. From the plate you already have dished up move half the food onto the smaller plate. Try that for size. Give super sizing da Boot!
Could you be addicted to soda pop? After my friend had her second child, she tried everything to loose the extra weight she had put on during the pregnancy. Several months later she went for a routine physical examination with her family physician. They discussed her unsuccessful dieting. Without changing her routine and behavior the doc asked my friend to journal what she ate and drank along with the amount of physical activity for one week. Can you believe it was as simple as dropping the sugary soda pop that she was drinking all day at work? My friend substituted soda pop with unsweetened ice tea, water, and black decaf coffee. It was incredible how fast she lost the weight and found her old figure. Give sugary sports drinks, energy drinks, sugar in your coffee and tea, and soda pop da Boot!
Are you a couch potato? Dieting without exercise does not work! Do not listen to anyone trying to sell you a diet program that claims you do not have to exercise. They only want to take your money. You must get up and move. Take a stroll at the mall or go for a walk in the morning or after dinner. Join a sport team or take a swim class. You will be amazed how much faster you will loose weight with exercise. Give the enormous amount of TV time and computer gaming da Boot!
Do your friends or family lead you astray? I have pointed out a few bad habits regarding diet but friends or family members can also be a bad influence in some cases. Maybe you have friends or co-workers that encourage stopping for drinks often or dinning out at restaurants that do not offer healthy entrees on the menu. Do not give up your friends or family but suggest a change of venue that offers more healthy food and beverage choices. Excessive alcohol consumption and extreme fatty foods on the menu should be given da Boot!
Are you guilty of too much fast food because it is fast, easy, and convenient? When my daughter was young we would shop all day with my friend and her two daughters. Our motto was "have french-fry will travel." Yes I was guilty on two accounts; a food reward for my daughter's good behavior and the most convenient on the run. I heard this a few weeks ago and it is good advice; "Anything that comes through the car window is not food", give it da Boot!
I believe small changes in diet and behavior may just save your life!

Effects, Causes, and Solutions of Child Obesity
Effects:
Child obesity is an increasingly prevalent disease. Since 1960 child obesity has risen 54%; some experts estimate the overall prominence of child obesity to be as high as 34.7% of all children ages 3-11.
Child Obesity is the leading cause of Pediatric Hypertension and is associated with type 2 diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease, the leading cause of death in America according to the American Heart Organization.
This disease increases stress on weight bearing joined (back, knees, and ankles) which can lead to arthritis later in life, as well as increase the risk for injuries in these areas.
However many psychologists believe the most devastating consequence of Child Obesity is the severe psycho-social problems that are a direct result of child obesity. Lowered self-esteem from a negative self image due to the child obesity can lead to lack of confidence and under achievement.
Child Obesity also has many social impacts as well. The impact of obesity on relationships can be significant. Other children may ostricise and avoid your child, enhancing the negative self-image.
Causes:
Understanding the causes of Child Obesity is paramount to its successful treatment. Children mimic their parents in many aspects and among them is the amount of physical activity they get and their eating habits.
The risk of a child developing child obesity is increased if one parent is obese and nearly double if both parents are obese.
Child Obesity is much more common among children who frequently watch TV. Little energy is expended and high calorie snacks are consumed. Child Obesity causes lethargy so the child watches TV. While watching TV the child eats high cal snacks causing significant weight gain, which then in turn causes more lethargy. This cycle is up to the parents to break.
1/3 elementary children have no daily physical education. 1/5 elementary children have no extracurricular activities.
The other major cause of child obesity is heredity. This doesn't mean a child will be obese, it merely means that child has increased risk and must carefully monitor their weight and diet. Overweight mothers are more likely to have an obese child. Studies have shown obese mothers' children gain nearly 7 lbs more than their normal weight counterparts by 3 months of age.
Treatment:
Physical activity should be a part of every diet program. Secondary is managing calorie intake by diet management, and third is to modify the behaviors of the children so they stay healthy.
Education of the parents and children on proper dieting techniques is essential!
