There is a lot of emotional pain in people that suffer from social phobia because they are alone and afraid of being around people and thus they cant have healthy relationships. This disorder usually appears at an early age in children, bu it can appear at any age.

Children with social phobia is something that has to be taken very seriously because if its not treat it on time or is confused with just shyness it can have negative consequences in his adolescence.


Causes of Social phobia in Children

There is no scientific proof of what causes social phobia in child or any person, however there are certain circumstances and things that can cause or trigger social anxiety.

Heredity is one common cause of social phobia, if the parents of the kids have this disorder he most probably inherited from them.

Neurological, an unbalance of serotonin chemical in the brain can also be a cause of social anxiety, because that substance is in charge of the fear response in the brain.

The environment, if the child is raise in an environment that is no social, where family members avoid people, where they are over protective of the child and dont let him try new things by his own, it can be a cause also.

In other cases a cause can be negative experiences, a trauma or something biochemical.

How to diagnose social phobia in children

Even when the child is just a year old you can notice some behaviors of social phobia. They are less interested in trying new things, they are scared of new emotions or experiences that other child find excited.

When they are in pre school they are very shy around strangers, they usually will not speak with other people that are not their parents. In many cases they have mild to moderate language problem, but most have not physical or language problem.

There are many situations that they are scared of like the following which are some of the most common.

They have fear of:

  • Performance
  • Reading aloud in class
  • Speaking to adults
  • Speaking to authorities
  • starting a conversation
  • Ordering food in the restaurant
  • Going to parties
  • Writing on the blackboard
  • Giving his opinion
  • Rising his hand on the classroom

Children who have social phobia want to be alone even thought they dont like it, they have poor social skills, they have few or no friends, they dont want to be involved in after school activities and some dont even want to go to school.

You will notice more easily their social phobia symptoms when the child start going to school, because they feel very afraid of what the classmates will say and dont want to make mistakes or be embarrassed in front of them.

Children with social phobia are extremely frightening of presenting themselves in class or answering questions in front of them. You can ask his teachers what is the behavior of your child in class and how is his performance, the teacher should have a general idea of how shy or introvert your child is.

In some cases some children have selective mutism which is when they cant speak in front of other people, they fail to speak in social situations, this persist for about a month.

Social Phobia with Children and Medication

There are many medications to treat this disorder such as anti depressants and anti anxiety, but you should consult a psychiatrist or physician so he can give you proper prescription. Some drug medications cause side effects so you must be careful and monitor the progress of the child with a doctor.

There are also natural herb remedies and psychotherapy which is the most effective way to treat social phobia. Your best option is to find professional help and follow a treatment, dont wait any longer, because the sooner the easier it will be to recover. When the child gets in to the adolescence in becomes a real problem for him.

Have you read my hub telling the story of my son's school phobia?

He also suffered social phobia until he realised that no one was going to force him to do anything anymore and in time he chose to socialise more and more. I would now say he was a really 'sociable' teenager!
