Softball Bats

Over the past few years I have had the opportunity to use several bats.  I have used the Miken Freak, a couple of the Worth Mayhem's, and most recently the Worth Mutant.  I have been pleased with all these bats, and have done some pretty good damage on the softball field with these bats.  I have been playing softball since I was 16 years old. I grew up playing baseball but I was strictly a fastball hitter, I had a hard time waiting on the ball if it was an off-speed pitch.  So I started playing softball to see if it would help me wait on the ball, so I could hit a curveball.  Anyways, I stopped playing baseball because my life took me in a different direction, but I still enjoy playing the game, so for the past ten years I have been playing competitive softball with my friends.  I thought it would be cool to write about the experience I have had with the different type of bats that I have used over the years.

Miken Freak

The Miken Freak was the first composite bat that I ever used.  It was kind of slow to begin with, it took about 150 - 200 hits on the bat before it started to break in, but once the bat broke in it had some great pop.  For awhile this was the bat that everyone was going crazy about, if it was still 6 years ago, I would say that this is the best bat on the market, but that just is not the case anymore.  However, you can find this bat for a great value and get great results from it.  It has a wonderful sweet spot and the durability on it has been awesome.  In fact, it has been around 5 years since our team started using this bat and we still have it, and people still use it.  Since then Miken has come out with the freak plus, personally I have never tried it, but I heard some great things about it.  I would still suggest this bat for anyone who is serious about buying a bat.  It has a long barrel and it is well balanced.  Feels very comfortable to swing.  I do not suggest the Miken Freak 98, but only the Miken Freak 120 or the Miken Freak Plus, the ball comes off the bat way faster than the Freak 98.

Worth Mayhem

The Worth Mayhem is the bat I started to hit home runs with frequently. Worth usually comes out with a brand new version of this bat every year.  I started using the 2006 Worth Mayhem bat and was very impressed, it has a thin grip, so you can really control the bat well, and the sweet spot was also incredible.  It became the popular bat on the team and everyone enjoyed it.  We still have that 2006 version.  We did get the 2007 model and it cracked, it was more end loaded.  Because of Worth's one year manufactures warranty they gave us a new bat, the 2008 model, and it was hot right out of the package.  For the past couple years this bat has been "the" bat.  The mayhem has completely won me over to worth bats.  It has great distance wonderful durability and even after two years of been used and abused by a softball team, it is still popping out home runs.  I love this bat, if we did not already have this bat on the team I would have bought the new one.  We now have two models of the Worth Mayhem and people still really enjoy using them.  The 2008 model that we have is more balanced and it still has the thin grip for excellent control.

Worth Mutant 120 HD

I have loved everything about the Worth Mutant 120 HD bat. When you hold this bat in your hands you can feel the difference and the strength from the Worth Mutant bat, or maybe that's because of P90x. The first thing I noticed, is that it had a bigger handle. It took me a little time to get used to that, but I actually really enjoy it. The grip on the handle is very comfortable too. It is the most comfortable bat that I have swung. The Mutant also has a three piece technology, that improves its performance and durability. When I was first checking out this back, it had great reviews in power and distance, but low in durability, I decided to go for it anyways, and I am glad I did. Although I did not get to the greatest start in my career, the bat has really turned on the heat. The balls are coming off this bat soooo fast. It has a big sweet spot and it is very well balanced. I would definitely recommend this bat to anyone, and for the durability issues, I have had none. If you properly break in your bat you should not have a problem. Here are a couple tips when breaking in your bat, first hit in weather above 60 degrees, anything colder make it easier for your bat to crack. Also, rotate your bat when you are hitting batting practice, try not hitting the same spot over and over again, but continue to rotate your bat after every hit. So far the Worth Mutant 120 HD has been my favorite bat.

It looks like the Miken Freak Plus is doing pretty darn good in the polls
