If your power demands peak and exceed what your solar power system is capable of then the grid will come on line and draw electricity from the power company. If the power company has a blackout then you have your own power stored in your batteries so while everyone else's house is black you still have power flowing.

The best thing about using solar power for homes is that the more we do it then the more we decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. Using a renewable energy such as solar will also decrease our carbon footprint and hopefully slow the global warming trend.
