Solar Power For Homes
52Solar Power For Homes
Solar power for homes and other personal uses such as camping or cabins is continuing to get easier and cheaper. The price for solar power now is just a fraction of what it was in the seventies and is continuing to come down. Especially when you look at the steady increases in the price of fossil fuels then the relative cost is dropping quickly over the last few years.
There are three different options to choose from when you are looking at converting a portion of your power needs to solar. The grid-tie system, the utility-interactive system, and the stand alone systems are all options that are currently available.
Currently the most popular is the grid-tie system because it has the lowest start up cost and ties in with your existing power service. This method allows you to supplement your power needs and only get a portion of your electricity from the power company. It does not utilize any batteries though and therefore has no storage abilities.
The utility-interactive option uses all of the components of a stand alone system but still ties in with the power grid. This means that you can have a smaller system that will supplement your power needs but will not require as large of an investment as a completely stand alone system. This allows you to have completely uninterrupted service. If your power demands peak and exceed what your solar power system is capable of then the grid will come on line and draw electricity from the power company. If the power company has a blackout then you have your own power stored in your batteries so while everyone else's house is black you still have power flowing.
The best thing about using solar power for homes is that the more we do it then the more we decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. Using a renewable energy such as solar will also decrease our carbon footprint and hopefully slow the global warming trend.
