History of Solid Gold Dog Food

The founder and owner of Solid Gold dog food, Sissy Harrington-McGill, raised great danes. In the early 1970s she travelled to Germany to acquire championship bloodline dogs, and while there learned that great danes bred and kept in that country were living significantly longer than those being bred and kept in the United States. She surmised that the reason for their longevity was the German practice of using more naturalistic dog foods. Upon returning home, she immediately began to do research into dog food nutrition, and in 1974 developed her own formula out of natural ingredients which she named Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken and began marketing it.

Today the company specializes in the development of foods which contain no preservatives or saturated fats, and are made of USDA Choice meats, and grains like rice, barley, oats and millet, instead of wheat, soy, or corn like most other manufacturers. They also have a line of skin treatments and shampoos.

How does Wolf King Solid Gold compare to Hill's Science Diet? I have a 38 lb. Weimaraner pup who was started on Wolf Cub and I am debating whether to feed Wolf King or Science Diet. Thank you. Lois Mueller

Hi Lois:

I did a little research and what I found is that your Weimaraner should have food that has the first ingredient being meat if you want a quality product. Crude protein should be no less than 30 percent and crude fat no less than 20 percent. The fiber content should be 4 percent or less.

One thing to keep in mind is that Weimaraner are prone to bloat, it is better to feed them two or three small meals a day rather than one large meal. They may also suffer from hip dysplasia, but are in general a hardy breed of dog. Hip dysplasia has been reduced to only 8% through conscientious breeding. Prone to hypertropic osteodystrophy (too rapid growth) and tumors.

The Wolf King Solid Gold, therefore, would not be a good recommendation because the crude protein is only 22%.

I cannot either recommend nor deter the use of Hill's Diet. I do know that Hill's Diet is owned by Colgate-Palmolive, and that they do use by-products, which is a concern.

I have to recommend doing a little research. Look at information online and weigh it all together.

I read with interest your comments about Weimaraner protein/fat recommended food percentages. I have two five month old Old English Sheepdog pups that are on Wolf Cub puppy. Can you help me understand their protein/fat requirements now and as adults. Also, any recommendation when to make the transition to adult food and what food would be a good choice?

How much ascorbic acid is in Cub Care? Is it easily assimilated or do they pee out 80%? My 3 mos. old G.Shepherd pup has a loose socket and I want to do all I can to prevent his hips from getting any worse as he develops.

I know Solid Gold is better than any dog show brand; even Science Diet, Natural Choice, Nutro Ultra, Nature's Recipe, California Natural and Life's Abundance, as well as Foster & Smith's and others, but I don't know yet if it's the best.
