Some Great Horror Movies To Consider

A Few Words

I have always considered myself to be a movie freak though I do not think that I am as obsessed as I would like to be.  The horror genre may be a little late considering Halloween just passed, but I wanted to share these films with others and would like to see if they interest others as they do I.

Many of the movies I consider to be favorites possess a quality to me, that is beyond explanation, it is rather the culmination of so many factors that attribute my fondness to any given film, these for example.  I am not attempting to review these movies, but instead I would like to explain to you the readers why I find them worthy of so many descriptive, positive adjectives.  I hope you will look into all the films I present here, and I hope you enjoy them.

Movies You Should Definitely Check Out

This Is The Movie Poster For Trick R Treat Which never made it to main stream theaters

A still from another French horror film Frontiers. This particular film and the next I have not seen, however through research I have learned a great deal. Not necessarily anything momentous but certainly what seems to be a well directed film.

Like the previous film I have not seen this. However of all the aforementioned I am most excited to watch this, as I will expand on a little next.

These are the "special" kids, and the story they are a part of is probably my second favorite, and I wish they would have expanded on this story. Its so good.

TRICK R TREAT

Sad to say I did not discover this film when it was being shown at film festivals two years ago, though I wish I had, because the movie awakened my interest in discovering films, and since seeing it I have been obsessing over getting the Bluray.  Trick R Treat can be compared to a few films to get an idea of what it is all about, one being Pulp Fiction, and the other Creep Show, and in a broader sense Tales From The Crypt, though I do not like to make the last comparison.  It is a collection of stories all occurring on Halloween night that are connected in small ways, and this is where I get the Pulp Fiction comparison.  Instead of trying to scare the viewer the director Michael Dougherty, originally a cartoonist, wanted to capture the spirit of Halloween, which he did with much success.  Again in comparison to other horror genre films I find that those which are supposed to be Halloween movies only have some tryingly scary event occur on the night of Halloween, and this is definitely where Trick R' Treat differs.  I do not intend on spoiling any of the plot details in the film so I will do my best.

Some really note worthy stories iclude a "principle who moonlights as a slasher", and a tale of school bus driver who is hired by ashamed parents to "take care of" their children who are "special."  The story of the bus driver and the children is in a way, split into two different parts, but thats all I'm going to say about the stories, cause I know I would hate having an awesome movie unknowingly ruined for me.  Going back to the structure, instead of presenting all the stories in a linear fashion as different comparable films would, Trick R' Treat mixes the stories and jumps between them; a quality which I appreciate, though others may not like.  To me, using this way of presenting the film allowed for many small cliff hangers, and those are always fun.  Had the movie been done in a story by story way, then I feel Trick R' Treat would be an entirely different film.  OOPS! I almost forgot an important character whom I will briefly tell of, Sam.  Sam is essentially Halloween's protector, he is all about tradition, though he never speaks in the film, I am sure he will become one of your favorite characters in the film.

The others wont be this long I promise!... I Think

Finally, the film just makes me happy, not exactly what you get from horror huh?  But no, this film may be a "horror" film, but it is also a holiday film, and that holiday being Halloween and it completely does its job when it comes to keeping the spirit!  I can't tell you enough how great it is. So like I'll say for all the others, definitely go check this one out!

Anna, One of two main characters, who to me is the primary, but the distinction between who plays a larger role can be argued. To me it is definitely her.

Martyrs

This film is a far leap from the previous, not saying its better, but rather I must be very careful in describing this film, as it is very easy to spoil this one. So if you plan on looking this up online be careful because I originally was going to post a certain trailer, but after viewing it I realized that it basically summarized the entire movie, and that is sooo not cool. With that said this description should be pretty short.

The movie opens in the first minute or so with a young girl who appears to have been abused, not sexually mind you, but physically, and she is frantically running through some industrial zone . From that opening scene you may or may not sense what is to come, but I'll only say that it is extremely intense, and be warned, this film is not for the faint of heart.

The films origins is that of France, and some may automatically dismiss the film finding it to be mindless violence, but it is not, and do not confuse this film with more tasteless films such as Saw... Hostel was O.K..; Martyrs is much deeper than that, however cliche that may sound. To be completely honest I am still processing what I saw as should anyone who sees this film, even if you find it at first to be ,not to your liking.

Though I know it was only a movie, in some sense I am saddened and angered by things which take place throughout, and that is possibly what the film could be all about, who knows?  Martyrs is wildly different from other films in the horror genre, unlike anything I have ever witnessed.  So if you do decide to watch this film, then you should definitely keep an open mind, don't go to watch the film and tell yourself you don't like it before you see it, WAIT this part is very important, process what you have seen. Certainly this film is not for everyone, but should you choose to watch Martyrs, and I hope you do, Be ready.  Because coming out of this film you will either utterly despise it, or you will feel as I do, and need some time. Upon reading the reviews of others I see this contrast very clearly, and I do in some ways feel wrong after watching the film.  Because, could it be I am ignorant to the subject matter and can only accept it because I lack the understanding to realize what this film really is. As of the moment I can not say what is to be the truth, as to us it is merely a matter of opinion, but only time will tell.

Pics From Frontiers

Just a pic from Frontiers, and of all the movies I really know the least about this one. So it is extremely difficult to say anything about them.

I noticed in a trailer that this characters hair off in the movie and that seems to be a reoccurring act in French horror movies.

I know this is an extremely gory film and this picture just reassures that fact.

Frontiers

Well, like the next movie I have not seen this one, but for some reason it interests me.  The film comes from the Eight Films To Die For collection, and I don't usually look for any of these movies, but I was at movie stop browsing in the horror section in October, and I examined the case, read the synopsis, and took a look at the pics.  From what I saw it seemed to be a pretty interesting film and I thought It would be a nice addition to my collection, so this one was a blind buy that I have yet to watch.  Though I did look for reviews and information about the film online, this being what my recommendation is a basis of.  I will provide some links to various reviews and opinions of the film below, since I am not the best authority.  Again this is a French film, no I'm not obsessed its just a coincidence.  Frontiers is most definitely a violent film, and unlike the previous film, there seems to be no rhyme or reason for it, from what I can discern from the trailers and reviews.  There was a bit of excitement on my part around Halloween when I was really trying to reflect my movie watching with the time of year, but as of now it may be a while until I see this film.  If you plan on seeing all the films on this list then I would say put this one on the bottom, because there really isn't too much I can tell you here. As I said I'll leave some links.

Let The Right One In

Finally, my favorite movie on this entire list.  Well as I have previously stated I have not seen this movie, but the good news is I can tell you what I know about it; also the trailer should help a bit.  First of all it is a Swedish film, and before you go looking to buy this movie, a word of advice, look for the DVD/Bluray with "THEATRICAL" subtitles, this is extremely important.  Apparently the movies that were made for us had totally different translations of the language, and as a result we only get a basic knowledge of what the characters are really saying.  This issue was addressed by many angry fans who saw the movie at film festivals, and realized what had happened.  I was going to buy the movie from Amazon, but after finding this important piece of information I thought again, because there was no guarantee that the version I receive would be the theatrical version.  Anyways, this is crucial so remember that if you are going to purchase the film.

If you watch the trailer you'll notice a blonde boy, his name is Oscar, and he is basically picked on by the other children at school, and because of this he is an outsider.  The girl who we see is a vampire, her name is Eli, and she befriends Oscar.  That,s all I'm really going to say about the story since I really didn't want to know much else, because you know the whole spoiling movies thing.  So between the trailer and that little piece of information you might find this is a movie that you want to see; it certainly is for me.  This movie is a "Horror" film, but it seems to be pretty light on all the gore associated with the genre, and I really appreciate that quality.  It is more a love story about Oscar and Eli, and possibly an examination of good and evil, and how they co-exist.  I wish i could say more about this movie, but I can't and out of the other three if you choose to see only one movie I think it should be this one.  I'm not sure if I said that about another film, but if I did I retract my previous statement.  That fact that I am recommending a film which I have not seen is a little strange, but if you look into it maybe you'll feel the same way.

Thank you for the great suggestions. I love horror movies and finding one nowadays that does anything other than settle my appetite for gore is extremely difficult. It doesn't seem like anyone wants to think anymore. Hopefully these will be different.

I thought Martyrs was actually a very good film, just like you said . a little deeper then saw and hostel. I also enjoyed Trick or treat a lot. I'm more of an Asian horror film guy myself, but these are definitely worth a watch! Great hub fellow horror fan!
