Some Silly Poems

I write a lot of serious poetry, but I also like to go out on a limb once in awhile to try my hand at some silliness. In fact, when I was 18 and 19, all I did was write fun, silly, and wacky stuff. Somewhere along the years, I lost my ability to write silly poems.

As a habit, I try to write some silly or off the wall at least once a month. It can be a flash of reality, or complete fantasy—as long as it is different from the serious stuff I like to squeeze out of my brain. I’ve had to search through old journals to find these, which is always an enlightening journey, but here are a few of my dalliances.

Work Fantasy

Too tired tonight, locking up,

to pretend I’m a super spy.

push the ejector button, new

back-up tape in hand:

Code name is Blue Malibu.

---

Stealing government data,

maybe new missile blueprints,

or a nuclear-bio-atomic-virus

weapon thingy. Less than forty seconds

left to get out of the building.

---

But, tonight, too tired to pretend,

I simply switch the IT tape—

nobody cares about the non-profit

computer backup. Slowly slip

downstairs, set alarm, out the backdoor.

---

Tomorrow I’ll worry about the

man in the bushes who took

my picture, who IDs me

and blows my cover.

Tonight, I’m too tired.

This poem is like a woman—

Not easy to understand,

but worth the effort.

Happy Hour

Drinks around the table:

gin & tonic, rum & diet, whiskey sour.

Wednesday, hump day, drink day.

Afternoon drinks in a bar,

decently dark-

respectable, like a man with

clean fingernails.

Early Morning

The killer comes quickly,

carrying his knife. Memory.

A stab of steal under your eyes,

still sharp, into your eyes, through your skull.

He holds his gun, the bright

spark of a fired bullet – a blinding

snap against your head – bang-

banging. Your brain banging

against its skull.

Where’s the damn snooze button?

It Sucks Like Monday

I woke up

after a morning of eternal

errands, and a merciless

dentist’s drilling – the raw

reality when the numbness fades.

---

Who could stand the

thirteen year old boy cousin

--who knows everything in the world?

They are cool. I like this: "This poem is like a woman—

Not easy to understand,

but worth the effort."

Cheers.

Thanks. I like that one too. I felt it didn't need to be any longer than it is.
