Some thoughts on diet soda and sugarless candies.
59Do you consume diet soda or sugarless candy?
See results without votingUntil recently I have never tried a serious diet. Well I have been on a modified atkins for about 1 month now and have been experimenting with diet sodas and related products. I basically cannot have anything with any real amount of sugar in it. These are some of my observations on some of the products I have found.
When I tried diet cola, such as diet coke, coke zero, and diet pepsi I was not impressed. There was a world of difference in the taste and I did not find it satisfying. It really seems like diet colas are behind the times when compared to some other drinks. Diet orange soda is not bad as long as it is nice and cold. The best diet soda I have found so far is diet rootbeer. A nice cold diet rootbeer is quite enjoyable and I can almost trick myself into thinking it has sugar.
I have also been using the crystal light on the go drink mixes. If you get the right flavors and keep these drinks cold they are not bad either. It seems to be a good way of making water more tolerable to drink. Be warned these drinks are not as good when they get warm.
Sugarless candies can actually be good taisting as well. These contain something called sugar alcohols, which can act as a laxative. The price of these sugarless candies is not unreasonable and can be found together with your regular candies at walmart. They have sugarless turtles, peanut butter cups, chocolate, jolly ranchers, toffee, mints, and a variety of other options.
Atkins advantage products are hit and miss as far as I am concerned. Atkins produces a vareity of snacks that only have 1 gram of sugar. A lot of the snack bars seem to be decent in taste. I was extremely disappointed with the shakes though. But these products are definately welcome when you are on a significantly restricted diet.
Splenda seems to be a godsend. It might be expensive but really tastes like sugar. I have found it quite useful when making tuna with mayo, it can definately sweeten it up. With some of the products I have used recently I have a whole new outlook and hopefully will be able to use this to make a healthier lifestyle change.

ya i know the artificial sweeteners can cause issues for some people. I doubt either soda is really good for a person.
Sometimes I get the kids sparkling lemonade from Trader Joes. It tastes great and has the carbonation like soda. Their are some natural sodas that seem good. Jones uses natural cane sugar. It is funny. My wife tends to drink sprite when we go out to eat. Whenever I drink it I get so much more thirsty than I just was.
Instead of going cold turkey like the Atkins has you do, I've been weeding out items over the last few years. Now, aside from Sprite, I cannot stand the sodas that I used to have to have every minute of every day. Candies are disappearing, too. I'm like you in finding such a difference in taste, that I'm just weeding them totally out. So far, ice cream has not been successful :)

I am sorry to tell you that I avoid sugarless soda like the plague. First of all it tastes horrible. But the main reason is how unhealthy it is. I rarely have soda now but when I do I stick with regular sugar if not pure cane sugar. The diet soda has far less calories. But the artificial sweeteners are practically poison. I stick with water lemonade and iced tea. You should check out the book The Sweet Deception by Dr. Mercola.
