Fruit sorbets and frozen yogurt are the perfect healthy treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. Naturally fat free, when made with whole fruit, they provide a delicious way to get in one of those 5-9 servings a day!

No Ice Cream Maker? No Problem.

Instead of transferring to an ice cream maker, pour mixture into a 9 x 13 inch baking pan and freeze, stirring with a fork every few hours until frozen hard around the edges.

Note: Sorbets especially tend to freeze harder than actually edible when kept in the freezer for any length of time. Just before serving, thaw slightly, break into chunks and beat with a mixer to a palatable texture.

Lemon Sorbet

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 ½ cups fresh lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp freshly grated lemon zest
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

Stir together water and sugar in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Heat just until boiling, when all sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat, stir in lemon zest, cover, and let stand 10-15 minutes. Strain and stir in lemon juice and salt. Let cool, cover and chill overnight, or at least 4 hours. Pour into ice cream maker and prepare according to manufacturer's instructions OR see tips under "No Ice Cream Maker?"

Variations

  • For lime sorbet, substitute lime juice and zest for lemon.

Honeydew Sorbet

Ingredients

  • 4 ½ cups diced honeydew melon
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • ½ cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 Tbsp freshly grated lime zest

Instructions

Add sugar and lime zest to small bowl. With the back of a spoon, press zest to release oils, and let sit 5-10 minutes before mixing in lime juice and straining out zest. Process until smooth in food processor with melon chunks, cover and chill until cool all the way through. Transfer to ice cream maker and follow manufacturer's directions, OR see "No Ice Cream Maker?"

Variations

  • Try various kinds of sweet, fragrant melon, altering sugar measurement as needed.

Tropical Fruit Sorbet

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen mango chunks
  • 1 cup frozen peach slices
  • 1 cup frozen papaya chunks
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened orange juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp dried coconut (optional)
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

Combine lemon juice, orange juice, salt and sugar, stirring until all sugar is dissolved. Process until smooth with mango, peaches, papaya, and coconut (if desired) in food processor, then transfer to ice cream maker and follow manufacturer's instructions OR see "No Ice Cream Maker?"

Chocolate-Chip Raspberry Frozen Yogurt

Ingredients

  • 3 cups unsweetened frozen raspberries
  • 2 cups fat-free plain yogurt
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • ½ Tbsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

Process raspberries, yogurt, sugar, and vanilla until smooth in food processor. Pour into ice cream maker and prepare according to manufacturer's instructions, adding chocolate chips in the last 5 minutes of freezing OR see tips under "No Ice Cream Maker?"

Variations

  • For chocolate-chip strawberry frozen yogurt, substitute unsweetened frozen strawberries.
  • For chocolate-chip banana frozen yogurt, slice and freeze 2-4 bananas, depending on size, and substitute 3 cups frozen banana slices for raspberries.

Deliocious. My grand ma used to make it. I had to crank and crank the sorbet maker for hours. No fridge back them.

Pour ice around them.

What a taste and softness.

Nothing comparable.

I am going to try your recipe.

congratulations

Hector

These look delicious, but I think I'll wait 'til the weather warms up a bit.

I'm frozen myself now.

Is it ok if we substitue the sugar for splenda or any other sweeteners? I'm dying for a treat like his but I cannot have any sugar or fat for health reasons...

girl on a diet:

Absolutely.  Substitute equal measurements Splenda for the granulated sugar.

These sound delicious. It's got to be time to get out the old ice cream maker!
