Most sore throats are caused by a viral infections such as the common cold, the flu or mononucleosis. A small percentage are caused by bacterial infections such as streptococcus, hemophilus and mycoplasma, dust, smoke, allergies or low humidity. Sore throats caused by bacteria are usually the most severe.

The flu can be caused by any of hundreds of known viruses, which science reveals cannot be treated with antibiotics. Many choose to get a flu shot with the hope avoiding the flu completely. Unfortunately, it is rarely effective and has been known to cause the symptoms that the vaccine is meant to prevent.

Whether the sore throat is caused by a virus or bacteria many choose to use drugs such as tylenol and aspirin but they only temporarily mask the problem. In fact, they can prolong the illness because by diminishing fever, they also diminish the bodies attack on the virus.

Sore throat symptoms vary from person to person. They can range from a burning to scratchy sensation in the throat, which are caused by inflammation of sensitive throat tissues. The pain and swelling in the throat are caused by the immune system, which is increasing white blood cells and other substances sent to destroy the infection.

If a sore throat caused by bacteria becomes severe an antibiotic may be necessary. Antibiotics destroy intestinal bacteria essential to good health. Therefore, it is important to replenish bacteria by taking probiotics. Some medical doctors who have taken the time to get educated in nutrition are advising their patients to take probiotics along with antibiotics to replenish intestinal bacteria.

The best remedies for a sore throat are natural. They are a more effective solution than drugs because they have no side effects, treat symptoms and enhance the immune system, enabling it to more quickly and effectively overcome infections, regardless of the source.

Zinc lozenges have been found to be especially effective against sore throats caused by colds. Studies show that the duration of soreness is greatly reduced when the lozenges are used. Individuals who dislike the taste of zinc lozenges may use either marshmallow or slippery elm tea. They are effective at relieving pain because of their ability to coat the throat and allow for easy swallowing.

The leading cause of sore throats are upper respiratory tract infections. Adequate doses of vitamin C will deal with the infection and indirectly help relieve the sore throat. It also works as a natural antihistamine, helping to reduce inflammation in the body. A combination of garlic and echinacea exhibit antiviral and antibacterial properties and are effective in combating all pathogen born infections. Sore throats caused by allergies can be best treated by the herb goldenseal.

Finally, avoid exposure to smoke from cigarettes and car exhaust. Keep the body well hydrated by drinking at least eight glassed of liquid every day. A humid environment may help to keep the throat moist. An effective way to generate this type of environment with a cool mist vaporizer or humidifier. A diet high in essential nutrients, especially vitamin C, A and zinc is powerful preventative medicine against all types of infections.

The natural remedy for me that is very helpful- Umcka.

Also, I've heard conflicting advice about taking probiotics and antibiotics simultaneously. I heard it is better to take your course of antibiotics, then eat plenty of yogurt after.

Thanks for your comments everyone!

Izettl, it certainly doesn't hurt to be eating yogurt (natural unsweetened with active culture is best) or taking probiotics supplements while on antibiotics. In fact, replacing destroyed bacteria as soon as possible is important. Continuing afterwards is always a good idea.
