South Africa!

It is still recovering from the Apartheid but South Africa is showing signs that it is making a recovery. The recent decision to hold the football World cup in South Africa in 2010 shows how much the country has progressed in a short time.

The cities are popular worldwide, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban (the capital) are all cities that get millions of people visiting each year. There are also cheap flights available to people wanting to visit the country so now is the time to get out there and see a different culture.

Visit Cape Town!!!

One of the nicest cities to visit in South Africa is Cape Town, the mix of modern day and traditional culture makes it the perfect place to visit.

The best time to go is late August as it is not too hot and not too cold, it is the time where South Africa is coming out of its winter and into is glorious summer. If you leave it until September then the temperatures reach mid-30s and can make it hard to see all the sights because of the heat. So what is there to see?

Where to start! If you stay in Century City you will be ideally located to find all the sights. The great thing about Cape Town is everything you want is within a half an hour drive max. Table mountain is a must see and you can see so much of the city when you are on the top, there are cafes if you fancy a break from one of the 3 different walks around the mountain to get a fantastic view.

If you want to experience an amazing bit of culture then you can take the catamaran to the Island and see where Nelson Mandela was held for all those years. The tour is actually conducted by someone who was held there with Mandela and his stories are both shocking and amazing.

For those animal lovers, there are many safaris to choose from where you can see Elephants, Tigers, Giraffes, Lions and many more. These safaris are a once in a lifetime thing and a must do when visiting South Africa. Boulders Bay is where you can find the penguins and has some great restaurants by the sea.

There is so much to do and see it is impossible to write about everything, if there is anything you want to know leave me a message and ill do my best to answer them.

Pretoria-one of 3 capitals!

As one of the 3 capital cities in South Africa, Pretoria is a good place to visit for tourists. There are many nature reserves, museums and places of interest to visit and offers a great break from normality.

The Zoological gardens of South Africa can be found in Pretoria and you can find some interesting facts about the animals. You can also take a cable car ride which gives you a great view of Pretoria.

Museums such as Kruger House, the residence of the former Boer leader is an interesting place to see as the furnishings mostly remain intact from the era. The Transvaal Museum which is a natural history museum is also a good place to visit if you are looking for some culture.

Johannesburg- take your pick!

Johannesburg is the most populous city in South Africa and is by far the most advanced city in the country. It is the most westernised city in South Africa and many of the leading companies have offices there. The wearther can vary between 15 degrees during the winter months and 25 during summer months but it is not uncommon for these temperatures to rise and fall very quickly.

In the past, the city has not been seen as a tourist attraction but as there are many connecting flights to cities such as Cape Town and Durban, the city has developed some tourist attractions such as the Apartheid Museum and a large amusement centre.

Sport plays a huge part in South African history and there are many sporting hubs within Johannesburg with Rugby Union being the most supported sport as well as Cricket, Football and Athletics.

If you want some more info about what to see and do in Johannesburg then just click on the link below this article.

Visit Durban!

As the third most populous city in South Africa, Durban has plenty to offer anyone looking to visit South Africa. With a temperature averaging around 25 degrees all year round the weather is perfect to see the sights and get a nice tan at the same time!

There are plenty of theatres for those interested in the cultural side of the city as many plays are based around the history of Durban and how it has developed into the city it is today. The Golden Mile is a tourists favourite attraction as it is the stretch that runs along South Beach and includes the promenade, it is especially amazing at sunset (see picture).

For more information I have included the link to Durbans main tourist website.

South Africa is one fantastic travel country. Is there a reason why you only mentioned cities? I would give Jo'burg a pass and concentrate on some of the rural areas -- whale watching on the coast, Coffee bay, Kruger, etc.

I would love to visit South Africa someday, Travel Monkey, especially the Cape Winelands and Drakensberg Mountains.  This is a well-presented article...great job!  If only I could be an on-site correspondent at next summer's World Cup! I am sure that South Africa will put on a great show for the world.

P.S. - Go Man United!!!
